Netflix is set to release the Han Jae Rim-directed mystery thriller The 8 Show.
Previously named Money Game, the K-drama has changed its title to The 8 Show and has partnered with the global OTT streaming service Netflix to reach audiences worldwide.
The 8 Show tells the story of eight financially struggling individuals, invited to appear on a reality show.
The show can win them a huge amount, which they can divide among themselves equally.
In the game, the participants are challenged to hold out in a studio made of concrete walls for 100 days. However, there's a catch. Everything they spend money on, including basic necessities such as food and electricity, is 1000 times more expensive than the usual price and is subtracted from the prize money.
The 8 Show is adapted from the Naver webtoon Money Game and Pie Game by Bae Jin Soo, which have amassed 300 million views.
Director Han Jae Rim, recognized for his work in productions such as Emergency Declaration and The King, is well-known for his adept portrayal of psychological dynamics among characters.
In The 8 Show, he aims to capture the intricate dynamics of how the characters cooperate, become hostile, and betray each other in the game.
The actors playing the eight characters in the K-drama have also garnered significant attention.
Ryu Joon Yeol, acclaimed for his performances in hits like The Night Owl and Reply 1988, and honored with numerous awards, including the Best Actor award at the Korean Association of Film Critics Awards (2023) and the Rising Star Award at the London East Asia Film Festival (2019), reunites with director Han Jae Rim, after collaborating with him in The King.
Joining him are talented actors, including Chun Woo Hee, Park Jung Min, Bae Sung Woo, Lee Yeol Eum, Park Hae Joon, Lee Joo Young, and Moon Jung Hee.
The 8 Show will be released in 2024.
