I find it interesting that for a lot of people Manga/anime or Kpop led them to their drama addiction... For me though I was never interested in anything having to do with Asian culture. Although I had friends in High School that read manga. I always teased them about it. I also had a best friend who was obsessed with Kdrama but she was Asian so I just thought well that would be something she would be into. She even made me watch Full House w/ her at a sleeppver! lol. It was an interesting experience but after that I didnt have an interest in watching anything else. Fastforward like 3 years to 2010 when my sister tells me about this little Korean show called You're Beautiful that her friends were obsessed with. She said she didnt like it though cause it was about a crossdressing girl. Well that kind of peeked my interest especially after mentioning that the crossdressing girl sneaks into a rockband. Ive always been into the rock genre especially bands with hot guys so yeah after hearing all of that I started watching right away. After I ate up all the episodes within 2 days I searched for other dramas by the Hong Sisters cause i thought the show was well written. And that led me to other romantic comedies like SEcret Garden, City Hall etc. Seriously though I cant remember my life before Korean dramas. I feel like a totally different person. I think in Korean, I want to see Korean people everywhere, I want to dress like them, and I just feel like I've learned so much of thier values.
Hi, my name is tuneth and I have been addicted for like 8-9 years now. Still no cure yet, hopefully never. Anyway, my story is no different from others. It all started in 6th grade, when I got introduced to manga. (Then I didn?t know I have fallen in love with something I can never fall out of) Manga gave me an opening door to another world, which was Anime (Angelic Layers, Inuyasha, Naruto, Black Jack, Death Note, Eureka etc) and then later anime Live Action TV shows. Through all that I got introduced to Japanese culture, language, music (Artists like Arashi, Ai Otsuka, Yui...) and dramas/films. I do remember watching GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka), Sailor Moon, Hana yori dango, and much more. From there, to Korean drama and Kpop like Goong, Full house, A love to Kill, My lovely Kim-Soon, Autumn Tale, Spring Waltz, My Girl, Rain Bi, Se7en, Boa, Big Bang, DBSK, Super Junior etc. The more I watched the more obsessed I got . I also got to know Chinese, Taiwanese, Indian, Thailand (lakorn), Philippians, and Mexican (Spanish); cultures, languages, music and dramas. Even if my friends and family think I am crazy, I think I am just deep, deep, deep in love like everyone else. (Maybe just a little different) My new latest love is Turkish dramas.
Okay so, in Philippines I was the kind who watches dramas randomly whenever I catch them on TV (like Full House, Endless Love, etc.), I just sit back, and don't really pay attention to them that much, not really getting all worked up over it. Now in Canada, 3 years later, when I was riding in a car with my friends after hanging out, I overheard them talking about something, so I asked them. They said that they were going to my friend's house to watch korean dramas, they asked me if I wanted to tag along. I thought, why not? I mean it's better than being bored at home, and it might be fun. We were watching Playful Kiss, and I didn't know what to expect. I wasn't expecting to like it, but it would be cool if I did like it, another fun hobby is always good. Okay so, I was watching and I see THIS guy, Kim Hyun Joong. And I'm like, uhhhh hot much? Then I see a CUTE potential romance (we were in ep 2), so JACKPOT. I've always been a hopeless romance, whenever I watch/read animes and mangas that's the one thing I look for, so imagine how happy I am. After that day, my friend recommended personal taste which I liked, and then BOF. But what really SOLD me to k-drama land was My Girl. It was just soo cute, it remains one of my favorites. Now that I'm more experienced with k-dramas I find Playful Kiss and BOF horrible, and that KHJ is a bad actor (he's hot, but he can't act). It took me three month to finish those dramas, so the fact that it's one of my first dramas still leave a bad taste in my mouth, but hey, I'm happy that I'm here.
I was watching an anime , then I saw the anime that I liked as a drama, so I decided to check it out (yamato nadeshiko shichi henge <<3 loved it), I didn't really like it at first because the scenes weren't that well and it looked like it was shot in a garage or sth. , it slowly got better and there were those Go to dramacrazy.net thingies on the end, so I went, and then it started ^^ btw. 2nd drama I'm pretty sure I started watching would be BoysOverFlowers (not sure), but at first I thought it was very different from the jap. ones I usually watch, and then I noticed it was korean *clueless up to that moment* ( the dude kept saying anya=no and I kept thinking he was calling for another person to come or so ><)
How the heck did I discover asian dramas? I'm often asking myself that because really, living in my part of Europe, a chance to become a fan of, let's say, Korean actor, is very, very low. So, how did it happen? I was obsessed with Harry Potter series since I was 11. During breaks between books being published I was so desperate to know what will happen, what can happen and stuff like that, that I frequently visited HP forums and discovered a world of fanfiction. Then, I found this one story I liked very much and the autor stated that it was based on Hana Yori Dango. Even though I always disliked anime (I didn't watch as much as one episode - you know, just general dislike based on stereotypes) I gave it a try and... Since then I was hooked on anime. A year later I found out that my favourite manga of all times (Hana Kimi) had a live action version. I thought, wathever, I love it so much I can give it a try. And so I did. ... and I have to say, I don't regret that. After HK came HYD (this time live-action version), then I discovered korean dramas like Coffe Prince, City Hall and Secret Garden (my favourite of all times!) and I knew there's no way back. Now, I'm oficially addicted to asian culture and dramas and I can't imagine my day without watching at least one episode of it. So, J.K. Rowling, thank you for your great books (I still re-read them!) and for a chance to discover dramas :)
A Taiwanese/Vietnamese friend often invited me to her family's home for 'dinner & a movie'. We'd watch movies from Hong Kong or Taiwan. The family would take the time to translate when the movies weren't subtitled. When my friend married and moved out of town, I'd check out Hong Kong movies from the library. Then one day while changing channels on the TV, I saw subtitles. The AZN network was broadcasting Winter Sonata. The rest is drama history!

For my friends, coworkers & family who say that my love of dramas/movies is a temporary 'fad' for me, I encourage them to watch the Hawaiian short Ajumma! Are You Krazy???. I'm just as committed to my dramas as the main character of this film is to hers. The only difference is that RAIN is my 'oppa'!

p.s.: dinners with my friend & her family were always delicious!!
A year or so ago I came across Koishite Akuma. I saw the first few episodes, but then I stopped, I don't remember why. (I still haven't seen the whole show.) A couple of months ago, I came across a list of best Japanese dramas. Hana Yori Dango was on the list, and after reading the description, I just had to see it. I fell in love with that drama (and Rui), and since then I've been watching dramas every day :D
hmm my obsession started first by watching Fruits Basket ...then read the manga became a manga fanatic then an anime fanatic then landed in asian dramas which lead be also into much loved k-pop ^^
I was looking for a certain clip from "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (Disney cartoon version) on youtube back in 2006, and instead I stumbled upon page after page of a Korean drama called "Snow White/Taste Sweet Love." I was bored out of my mind, so I decided to check it out. I had no idea what I was watching, but I thought it was funny, so I ended up watching episode after episode and before I knew it I had completed it. After that, I wanted more... That's when I found dramas such as "Full House", "My Girl", "Goong", etc... and the rest is history...
I thought we already had a thread like this?
It all started with 2 manga : Glass Mask, which I started when I was 12 in 2003, and Kimi wa Petto, which I started....in 2006? I don't know. Anyway, I was looking for news about Glass Mask (at that time, the manga was suffering a 10 years hiatus...yes, I know...) and I saw on Veoh an episode of the 1995 drama. It was RAW and at the time, I didn't understand Japanese, but watching it, I understood it really was Glass Mask. That was around...2005-2006... Then same thing, I was looking for an anime of Kimi wa Petto, but instead I found the drama. Then I started a MatsuJun dramathon, then after Hana Yori Dango an Oguri Shun one lol. That's how it all started. My first k-drama was My girl, Full House then Boys Before Flower, in 2008. And yes, I also think we already had a thread like this...
i stumbled across BOF on netflix, watched the first five minutes and turned it off thinking "WTF?" then a few months later i was ill and bored out of my mind so i was flipping through hulu and came across you're beautiful. i loved the ridiculousness, but even more how commited they were to the silliness.
My first drama I remember was GTO. I dont really know why I started it actually. But it turned out really well. And then I looked up 1 litre, and that was it. Never looked back.
Soooo, I was really bored on animecrazy, so I went to dramacrazy. There I watched my first Asian drama Hotaru no Hikari. BUT that didn't launch my addiction. After I finished I still couldn't find any anime to watch, so I went back to dramacrazy and I decided to watch You're Beautiful, since it's number one on dramacrazy... and that's when the addiction started.
i was in preschool when Sailor moon came to Canada. i literally fell so much in love. i even have a sailor moon tattoo. after that was Dragon Ball...... and then i magically got into Asian dramas after that. so basically i dont know any other life. i even studies Asian dramas and cinema in College. thats dedication :)
