Or they put it in a glass filled with wine. Oh wait, that was in some video ;)
The thing with taking out the battery... that got on my nerves too until I had to do that when my phone froze (power button didn't work hm). And it was a one-step solution, while turning off the phone is (depends from the phone, but most often: ) 1. long press on power button 2. pressing YES in the "do you want to shut down your phone?"
When someone annoying is calling me, I guess the one-step solution is easier. That or smashing the phone. xD
It is simpler in a way, but if you take the battery out, you have 3 (or 2) different parts of your phone and you can`t lose any of them or your phone won`t work :D It`s a bit more difficult in other way. Not that in Dramaland anyone cares, anyway xD

Why can't they just turn the phone off??? I guess pushing a button isn't as dramatic as taking out the battery and I am watching a drama. But, geez...it gets on my nerves.
I half way understand the "rich" people smashing their phones when they are angry. I have wanted to throw my phone a time or two, but haven't because I can't afford to buy a new phone every time I get irritated. Still, even that gets old at times.
Then throw something else that won`t cause too much damage :) (or a toy phone, if it has to be a cellphone)
And for the record: I have never wanted to smash my phone :D
EDIT: Plus I think I would be surprised to see an angry person in a drama turn off their phone instead of just taking out the battery.
