****SPOILER ALERT****
After completing the series, I'm keeping my 9/10 mark because I really enjoyed watching each episode and eagerly waited the next week to meet with the characters again... all that despite the ending, which I have very mixed feelings about. Earlier today, I actually accepted it for what it was worth but reading your posts had me thinking this through again and I'm back to denial, LOL.
Ji Hyun was the embodiement of pure selflessness: she helped everyone but herself in her own death, she forgave, she loved, she shared and yet she had to die. AGAIN. I flipped this in every way and looked at it through every angle possible - I'm sorry, but this isn't fair. Neither to her, or to the people who genuinely loved her.
Same goes for the Yi Kyung/Yi Soo closure. Coming back from the deads to get married, saying all those things you couldn't, giving an unforgettable memory just to wipe it all and walk on the other forever the next day... way to have someone who tried to get over you for 5 years move on, Yi Soo! As opposed to Ji Hyun, Yi Soo did an act of pure selfishness so HE can actually leave without regrets. Raising the "not fair" flag again.
The whole "lost sister" attempt at mindfuck was epic... fail. I did not expect it but it wasn't appropriate. It's as if the writers tried to make up for Ji Hyun's death. Why, if she dies, no plot left! Let's make Yi Kyung's Ji Hyun's long lost sister so she can fill the hole and drag the story for another 1 hour episode. Yay. Comes free with cheesy "2 years later" scenes where you actually see her REPLACING Ji Hyun within HER family and HER friends (thanks god she didn't end up with Han Kang or I would have killed a kitten). This is disgusting in my opinion.
I'm asking you, why making a fantasy story if you don't use the fantasy to let the magic happen? When I watched "1 Litres of Tears", I knew where this was going but 49 Days has me feeling cheated and misleaded. I thought the series would have a "ANYTHING is possible through hardships, commitment and selflessness" type of message and it gave us a "life's a bitchy bittersweetness, enjoy it while it still lasts" instead. Should the show have been called "49 days to say goodbye" OR stop at episode 18, I would have perfectly accepted it all, but the writers chose to kill all the praise I previously had for it. Shameful.

About the ending -
WTH!? I mean, the romance in the show was slow but toward the end it was strong. I was ok with the scheduler passing on, but not Ji Hyun. I'm not a cusser, but I'm having a hard time stopping the phrase son of a b***H from rolling through my head. I'm really disappointed with the last two eps. That was not cool at all. She should've lived. Why did they have to turn this into a message about how life goes on? She should've lived. There was no reason for that! ugghhh
***YET MORE SPOILERS***
I knew either Ji Hyun or Yi Kyung was going to die the moment the Scheduler was given his final schedule and looked at the last person to die with disbelief. And I'm glad that Ji Hyun died, and not Yi Kyung for many reasons. (Not that I'm GLAD Ji Hyun died, but rather glad in terms of the story...) If Yi Kyung had died, that would have fed into this whole "romantic" Romeo and Juliet notion of being together with your loved one in death. I loved it when Yi Soo in his good-bye speech to Yi Kyung told her that even if both were dead, they still wouldn't be together---because that's what death is. That speech was so full of love and wisdom that I find it hard that anyone could have disliked that moment! As for the fairness of Ji Hyun dying, I hate to be trite, but life isn't fair. And death certainly isn't. Narratively, I think Ji Hyun's death worked well with the motif that the drama had built up for itself about love, life, and death, especially in terms of the constant mirroring between Yi Soo/Yi Kyung and Ji Hyun/Han Kang. No, it's not a happy ending, but it made its point poignantly I thought. Instead of ending with another happy couple and readiness to move on to the next love story, 49 Days left me with some questions that I'm not really prepared to face at my young age: What would happen should I die today? Who will it affect? How will it affect them? Will I leave with my loved ones knowing that I've appreciated the happiness and love they've given me over the years, and will they know that in my own little way I've tried my damndest to return it in kind? How many of us have thought of a loved one and said to ourselves "I should call them up", and never follow through? A friend of mine said that after watching this drama, she called up her mom and to say "I love you" because one never knows. Some have said that the lesson in 49 Days is a bit patronizing, but how many us actually embody the lesson that life moves on or that death is a necessary "evil"? If Ji Hyun had lived, I think what I found moving about this story would have been sacrificed, and we would have been left with just another love story.
Then there's Yi Soo and Yi Kyung's closure, which, as I'm sure you can probably tell by now, I'm totally satisfied with it. In my opinion, Yi Kyung seemed to have checked out of this world not simply because Yi Soo had died, but because she was left after his death with the impression that he had abandoned her both physically and in terms of his love for her. I cried so hard when she told Dr. Noh, "I am somebody nobody wants." With that mindset, of course she would find it difficult to move on and engage herself with the world. Yi Soo himself found it difficult to move on to his next life because of his love for Yi Kyung; that's probably why he volunteered to remain in this quasi-purgatory as a Scheduler for 5 years. Those moments they spent together after 5 years was necessary for both to accept that they adored each other, were precious people to each other, but that the time has come for them to both move on. It might have seemed cruel on Yi Soo's part, but he needed to pull himself away from Yi Kyung as much as she needed to pull herself away from him. In that sense, what Yi Soo did was a selfless act because, by throwing the engagement rings into the lake, he let Yi Kyung go. He helped Yi Kyung realize that she who was loved and is worthy of love in the future; he prepared her to be able to accept whatever love is coming her way.
I agree that the whole "lost sister" thread was pointless, but I wouldn't say that that Yi Kyung replaced Ji Hyun since it was made clear that everyone still remembered Ji Hyun fondly, and it seemed to me that that shared fondness for Ji Hyun is what drew everyone together in the end.
The fantasy element is something that many people have complained about. I'm a huge fan of fantasy, in movies, shows, and books, but nothing upsets me more than when a writer sacrifices a satisfying plot for the sake of magic. Magic/fantasy in K-drama has been used as this obnoxious deus ex machina to bring about a happy ending. I haven't seen 1 Litre of Tears, so the deus ex machina gripe mainly refers to the two fantasy dramas I've seen: My Girlfriend is a Gumiho and Secret Garden, in which the fantasy element brought about a happy ending in one without any rhyme or reason (the eclipse or whatever it was in Gumiho) or was completely pointless since Ghost Dad apparently had the magic to make everything right in the end so WTF (the body-swapping in Secret Garden). The 49 Days Program, as they refer to it in the show, had a specific purpose, and it fulfilled that purpose, but we were never guaranteed a happy ending. Magic in a drama shouldn't be a Get Out of A Sad Ending Free card, and it's often used that way. In my opinion, that's a complete misuse of the magical element, and it leaves me feeling empty instead of fulfilled. And like I said above, I'm glad they opted for the bittersweet ending, since I think there's so much that can be taken from this drama because of it.
That's all my opinion---I know. I just thought I would lay out more coherently (if what I wrote made any sense) and explicitly what I thought of the ending. =/
waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
ep 18 ending = omg *tears* w/ *smile*

psss: still .. 90% of the show is amazing,,,

Totally agree with both of you.
I get that fantasy is not about happy ending, but it's also not about reality. Why should a plot start and develope in the realm of fantasy and end up telling us that death is part of life? Not only it defeats its purpose - whatever it was - but it's also ridiculously obvious. As if we viewers didn't know that every moment has to be cherished.
If I wanted to watch a drama about facing death with a serene smile, I'd have watched any of the dozens stories of people fighting against an incurable desease. There's a heap in the history of dramas.
In the end, why was this girl given these 49 days? To learn? If so, she should have had the opportunity - and I mean time - to put whatever she had learnt to fruition.
Was it to help Song? But Song learned her "lesson" because she met her lost love, not because she was inhabited for more than a month. Which was another part that pissed me off. Like GraphicFighter said, how is seeing your long lost love for another 24 hours, exchange vows and all, of help to make you go on with your life? The impression it gave me is that she spent the last 5 years suffering like a dog not because she had lost someone she cared about, but because she was angry at him supposedly cheating on her. I view this as an offence to the idea of love. And, not yet happy, she has been given another 24 hours with him and she doesn't, even once, tell him how important he was to her. She even fell asleep, for crying out loud!
So, I'm not disappointed because the ending was sad - I never was invested in this story anyway - but because that bit that I liked, which was the fantasy part - was utterly destroyed by a supposedly phIlosophical message on how life is. Something which, honestly, I already knew, thank you.
I think everyone has different point of views on the ending but if the drama was about the 49 days, it should have been just that. I would have loved the final frame to be Ji Hyun's eyes opening, leaving an open ending à la "Avatar". No epilogues. I don't like epilogues. Why going further? It kills the viewers' imagination (like "Secret Garden"... ugh the whole kid thing).
The story was brilliantly dramatic up to episode 18 with just the right amount of fantasy. Past this, it turned into a mindfuck melodrama failing to surprise (I was not surprised, I was shocked) and draw ultimate tears from us (I did not cry past Ji Hyun's death because I was still in "WTF'" state). It felt cheap, forced and not logic. What kind of point did the writers tried to make exactly by "reviving" Ji Hyun after 49 days of hard work just to kill her in a more pathetic way? That life's unfair? Carpe Diem? There is no lesson for me to learn from that story. I know what it's like to lose someone close (such as parents and siblings) and I'm not watching entertainement to remind me just how hard it is nor to sink myself into further despair UNLESS I want to and I consciously decide to do so (FYI "1L of Tears" is a terminal illness drama). Had I known the ending beforehand, I'm not sure I would have chosen to watch it. Don't get me wrong, I know how to appreciate a bittersweet story (god how I loved "Moulin Rouge!"), but I just wasn't prepared for that in 49 Days.

Yeah I totally felt robbed. Everything that you, graphicfighter, has said has ran through my mind, but I'm too lazy to type it out lol. Although... I was ok with the Scheduler passing on - maybe it's because I'm a guy and not a fan girl. This makes me so mad at the writers that I want to write them and tell them that that I've decided to kill myself because of the last two episodes. I'm not seriously thinking that, but I wanna be like "Message received - life sucks." This and Inception are the only 2 endings that have made me this mad, and it's because both of them were absolutely amazing for the majority of the show/movie but instead of giving us a satisfying conclusion, they decided to be "unpredictable" and replace our satisfying conclusion with a stupid message that nobody cares about! I didn't this show to be preached too. I watched it for the adventure.
And someone mentioned the whole, we jumped 2 years foward just for a flashback. I was laughing at that too.
Any way, I'm going to do the same thing I did with Inception. I'm going to imagine that Ji Hyun woke up and didn't remember anything, but Kang's love for her caused her to remember - happily ever after. And I do admit that the redemption of the bad characters was good, so we could keep that too.
All in all, I don't think I could recommend this to anyone because I don't want them to feel robbed like me. Maybe they'll make an alternate ending on the dvd.
