[Discussion] Scent of A Woman

It struck me that while we are all rooting for Yeon Jae and hope for her to fulfill her wishes, it's terribly cruel on her part to make a man fall in love with her when she's dying soon. Don't get me wrong, I love her character and the whole point of the drama is about living one's life to the fullest because there's no guarantee for a tomorrow, but I wonder if she ever paused even for a second to consider the implication of her deeds.
While having an affair with a hot guy would be just perfect, her wish is to fall in love and in doing so she's pulling him into it too.
How would you feel if you were the guy and you were to discover that the woman you've fallen for has a terminal desease of which you knew nothing?

I find your post interesting because it made me realize that most of the time in dramaland we always get the other end of the story. The main lead has almost always been the one to fall in love, and then find out their loved one has a terminal disease of which you had no idea.

However, in Scent of a Woman they approach the same situation from another perspective. This time it's the character with the terminal disease.

I get what you're saying, and the scene when Ji Wook finds out will be quite heart wrenching, I'm already anticipating it, but I think the change in perspective is what makes this drama so interesting. Of course the great chemistry always helps.

Of course!:D I'd lie if I said that I'm not wishing for a whole lot of romantic interaction/sizzling contacts and so on, and I am anticipating his discovery too, mostly because I believe it will come quite late, when the guy is already cooked and lost (sorry for the barbaric language), which is going to make it all the more heartwrenching.
Nevertheless, I have been thinking a lot about this while watching this drama: living your life to the fullest, of which I've always been a die hard supporter, has consequences on the people who love us, at times terrible ones. Because the drama is narrated from her perspective, we as viewers are naturally lead to root for her and see no real wrong in what she does, but... well, on a more rational level it IS wrong.

I'm watching EP 09 as I type. Did anyone notice they had PTB playing on a TV in the hospital scene just after LDW's character tells that witch to live her own life and he encounters the DR? lol OK, back to the watching... :D

I just have to say that the ahjummas in Suwon, where my orientation is being held, are all about Scent of a Woman. A group of us went to a bar last night (Sunday), and around 10, the ahjummas started yelling and swatting at the ahjussis that were parked in front of the tv. The ahjussis put up a good fight, but they eventually caved under the heavy hands of the ahjummas, who triumphantly proceeded to change the channel to Scent of a Woman with much groaning from the defeated. Another teacher and I said in our rickety Korean that we liked this show, and that just puffed up the ahjummas even more as they kept gesturing towards us and saying to the ahjussis, "Waeguk like! Waeguk like!" They also gave us a free pitcher of beer, and whenever one of them passed by, she would nudge me and ask, "Lee Dong Wook like? You like?" And that's my story.

This part (at least where she realized wth am I doing? I'm dying! ) just passed. I sobbed with her, especially when she goes looking for Eun Seuk sobbing uncontrollably to save her.

I just finished watching episodes 9 and 1O (POSSIBLE SPOILERS) and omo how heartbreaking this is getting! Ji Wook has got to be the perfect man, everything he does for Yeon Jae is just so sweet - all the more reason it's even more sad. In episode 9 I loved the tent scene haha. It was sweet and funny. It's sad that her cancer has spread and her condition is getting worse. In episode 1O the whole time I knew she was going to wind up doing that, but that date couldn't have been any more perfect! I wish she would've told him the truth, but I understand that she felt if he'd hate her then he'd forget about her. The problem is, he's already at the point where he cares and even loves her, so of course he'll be worried when she ignores his calls. I'm glad he followed her friend, though, and now he knows the truth. I really can't wait for episode 11!

Im being torn apart by this amazing drama. From one point of view, i wish sooo much for her to be "magicaly cured". My romantic heart really wishes for a happy ending. And i will be heartbroken, if she will die.
But on the other hand, i want this to end realistically. This is actually the first time, when i partially wish for a main chara to die. Dont get me wrong please, I love her, i wish she would live. But as a fan of K-dramas and someone, who wants to see the real things. I also want to see the real ending to this tragic story.
Thus... this story makes my heat ache. SOmetimes i want her to live happy ever after, sometimes, i wish for ending similiar to 49 days (where the main character leaves with peace in her heart, leaving her loved ones alone).

Ep 9 seriously made me want to slap Sae Kyung bro & dad & Ji Wook father. I mean the bro is so unimportant but yet he is such a bitch with his damn attitude. You should know damn well why the guy dont want to marry you equally bitchy sister. The dad needs to grow up....so because Ji Wook dump your daughter you need to be an ass and try to ruin alot of people's life. Ji Wook father firstly you shouldn't be allowed to rule your son's life....nuff said

I know what you mean about the brother? I was scoffing all the while he spoke. I even said out loud: "Seriously, you need to go somewhere..."

I also really hate when all these rich people use their money and influence to make other people's lives miserable. People are not toys, when will they learn that? And honestly Sae Kyung, how petty can she be? She doesn't even like Ji Wook one bit and yet she feels like she needs to knock down the "competition". A competition that is only in her head.

I too wanted him to find out about the cancer, but I wanted her to tell him and not him to find out that way.

I was thinking the same thing but then I decided I'm glad it happened this way. Especially after she tried to end it with him. He's already going to be hurt that she is dying and started a relationship with him...Hopefully it will lessen his bitterness that she tried to do the honorable thing (in her eyes) and separate him from her suffering. Not that I think the knowledge of her having cancer will end their connection but maybe after he's pieced everything together...and he's thought about it, he will understand her a little better and make their coming back together faster. They both need their remaining time together to start NOW. I'm holding out for a miracle and I know this show is going to bring on the hurt. This is more painful than 49 days! GAH!
