Centered around the restaurant, JTBC drama ‘Balhyo Family’ on Wednesdays and Thursdays depicts the ‘Meal Community Spirit’. This drama is praised as very humane. At the center of popularity is an actor named Song Il-Kook (40) who plays the role of Ho-Tae. He grew up in an orphanage and became a mid-level boss among gangsters who eventually ended up in the restaurant Chunjiin. As he is trying to hide his aching heart, he tries to act tough. We met him at the studio in Wanju, Chunbook on Jan 15th, is hands were rough just like those of ‘chef’s aide’.
Not at all as dignified as he used to be.
“My image of Jumong is still very strong as many people jokingly tell me I still live off of it. I have been worrying about the image of such a strong (historical) drama, but luckily I got a chance to work in this one. I feel so lucky.”
“I used to be a king (Jumong), stepped down to a cop (Crime Squad), and stepped down even further and became a gangster this time (laughing). Being on my high horse does not help, but it was hard to come down to Earth. I used to be pretentious, even in a scene where I stared at something, but now I peel the onions squatting.”
Ho-Tae, in the drama, is a person who has the ultimate sense of taste. There was a scene where Ho-Tae recalled the memory when he tasted Paprica Kimchi at a table with his family. Does he have any memory of such a strong taste? We got to talk about his mother Eul-Dong Kim (66) who is an actress and a senator.
I really enjoyed any food prepared by my mother who was always so busy. (Mrs. Kim expressed her sorry feeling that she could not take care of her son in her recent essay book, "Story of Kim Eul-Dong and Three Men").
“I really liked the curry, but on the days when I was punished by my mother, I got to eat it. Probably because she felt sorry, she always prepared it herself. ''
The interview went on between the shootings. Filming was going on from morning to night continuously. Cold weather temperatures dropped to below zero. Still, there was endless laughter at the filming studio.
“Just as many ingredients make excellent Kimchi, the story of life is the same. Probably, by the time this finishes up I will be ‘fermented’ just like the audience. I will always remember the value of what ‘Chunjiin’ says”.
