no you don't need to. episode one give you all the background info you'll need. And the rest of the story will unfold with its secrets (unless you want to be spoil by novel readers).

So TSJ exposed his brother and wife infidelity and both got ousted by the clan. The clan elders decided to keep the child's real identity private. The brother hold grudges. Later, he was able to use his child to lure out TSJ to threaten him. TSJ was prepared HOWEVER the brother got some huge backup that TSJ and his guards were overwhelmed. In the struggle, both of them died.
After the expose, the wife was chained up and tortured (by her own clan). Over time, she succumbed to the torture and died. Before she died, she told Jin she realized he's the better man, and she was blinded by her brother to hate him.

No.. that drama is adapted from the prequel novel "Once promised" and they butchered the novel so bad. You don't need to watch the drama. They don't touch on the first part much and if needed, they'll mention it in the drama.

1. XY stayed with CX until he's an emperor and beyond. She never left him until she was about to get married, but she end up not.
2. XY tried to but couldn't so she commits suicide instead. She fed both of them poison but her is more poisonous. So they was able to save CX but XY was dead. (XL saved XY by exchange one of his life for her, but CX never saw her again.)
3. The child is of the fiancé and the brother, not TSJ. All three died so the child became the sole heir of the Tushan clan. Everyone still think that the child is TSJ. He never cleared it up and have no intention to.
4. That scene is when XY found out TSJ fiancé got pregnant. She pretend she was fine and smiled until she got home. Because she suppressed her heartbreak so much she threw up blood.

the bug is still inside FL. And he doesnt really benefit much because only he feel pain when she does, but it doesn't work the opposite way.

they're not friend or enemy. she's the prey, he's the hunter. XL will use XY in a heartbeat if he need to.

I think it also help that in the drama, I can see XL as the true loner that he is. In the novel, he just felt very lofty - powerful, scary and distanced. But in the drama I could see XL from a different eyes. I could see his unappreciated loyalty and devotion to that army yet still being despised by them. And the way he really understand and empathize with XY's stories. In the novel, XY never really caught on those moments, didn't quite understand YL, and just thought she was able to manipulate him with her sob story and lies.

I think he MIGHT, but then he will be just harsh when he found XY kidnapping A'nian. In the drama/novel, when Yuan first strike XY he felt apologetic because he didn't realize XY has such low spiritual power. He even apologize. So I think Yuan is the type of person who deal with people on an one on one basis. If he knew XY was a woman, and thus view her as weaker, he would have treat her a little less harsh. But when you hurt his people, then he will deal with you as much more than he gets.

what really shocked me about this drama is that I was 100% team 17 in the novel but the drama is making me love and empathized with XL more. But what funny is that I see a lot of XL's novel fan also appreciate and won over by 17's quiet devotion in the drama.

For me what changed is that I could SEE XL's longing looks and internal struggle on screen. Whereas in the novel, it was written from XY's POV who always view XL with a touch of fear, caution and of course obliviously of his feeling. For the XL's fan, they used to dismissed his quite devotion as boring puppy love like the FL, but on screen we can see 17 assertiveness and jealous self that FL couldn't see.

I just want to say all the actors are doing such a phenomenal job bringing these character to life and give them so much warmth and dimension. For Yuan, even if he is not a strong contender in the romance aspect, he is an excellent character. He is complicated and conflicted in his own way. Even if you don't agree with his action, you can understand it from his perspective. What I really appreciated is his fake yet genuine politeness and smile. It's fake because he is used to putting on a mask like autopilot, but it's genuine because he does appreciate the simple life and the simple people that lives that life. He even admires them. He wanted to be genuine but yet to know how, the same way as XY who want to be genuine but too afraid of getting hurt. I really love that weird plasticky smile of Yuan that both scare me but make me empathize. Such a weird feeling.

The time watching the drama just flew by. It feel like a lot had happened but then you realize nothing has actually happened and you're still in this town, figuring out all these people going around in circle but yet bored because you're enjoying their banters and outwitting each other.

who need "till death do us part" vow, when you can literally get a bug that make sure that even death cannot "do us part".. live and die together. In a way it almost feel like a more than marriage vow.

I was going to say the same. People can fight for their ship but I hope people will stay civil and don't be rude to others.

I don't think XL was "desperate". Yes, XY blood is special and it's helpful. But it's not like he need it to survive. He been fighting and getting injured for hundreds of years. I think XL just like XY more than he admitted to himself. They are like kindred spirit. XL have a dark/tortured past himself. He is also quite lonely. In one episode, we were shown that the soldiers think very lowly of him because he's a monster, something that XL is used to. But he recently said XY made fun of him but didn't think he's weird. And despite XY lying a lot, he can tell she's honest about being lonely. For XL, he just found someone who's similar to him AND doesn't think lowly of him.

And say what? (sorry dont mean to be rude).
First - it's not like XL will stopped killing CX for XY? They don't have that kind of relationship.
Second - she want to hide her relationship. Given XL position, it is very advantageous for him to use her for his goals.
So - there's nothing good coming out telling XL.

Technically, all the town people are different types of animal. The lady that gave birth in the first episode was a rabbit. The mirror/talking tree show some others are leopard, cat, frog and so on. Even human is an animal.
Feifei is a special animal (still an animal and have yet take on humanoid form) with a special ability to detect woman's voice. And XL is also an "animal", he's a demon. So being an "animal" does not mean they can detect XY. Her artifact is very strong so for people with strong spiritual power, they can't detect it either.

Second, TSJ is not an "animal". He's a diety. He's not on the same class Feifei. He's a descendent of the 9 tail fox clan - which is a magical creature.

There's no earth, heaven or hell in this drama. In this world, there just three major kingdom of the gods/diety. The town is a middle ground point between these kingdom where all creatures can reside without affiliation. The other "people" in the town aren't exactly "human" either. For example, the lady that FL help giving birth in episode 1 is a rabbit. And when the talking tree/mirror show the town people in their true forms, you have other types of animals as well showing as well.
