What?! The first 10 minutes when they're "repelling" down into the cave with the weird wall - they're just holding a rope and the greenscreen behind them changes. I'm honestly not seeing the "production quality" so far.
I'm halfway in the first episode, but...this is kinda bad, isn't it? It looks super fake and greenscreeny and the dubbing is just atrocious. None of the main guys' voices fit very well. Also whatever AI de-aging they're doing with William Chen, it's seriously making him look like a wax statue. Either that, or he just naturally looks 15 years younger and is a terrible actor.

If you read my comment, I specifically say he's in his 30s, and I say nothing of his acting or fighting ability. He's less terrible than in Martial Universe, and less bland than in The Lost Tomb, that's about what I can say.
Only two episodes in, I'm mostly pleasantly surprised. It's refreshing (if a bit overwhelming) to be thrust into a jianghu where I don't recognize any of the characters, sects or factions. I like that the fights also seem to involve some kind of tactics or ideas and aren't just won by someone's ult CG finger blast. (though that is present as well) I do wish they used an older actor for the protagonist. Or older looking - I was shocked to learn Yang Yang is in his thirties. I get why they make him look like a 20 year old, but it's annoying. He's supposed to be this seasoned hero, but once again we have to placate the idol girlies. -____-

Considering that in one case Wuming isn't a sheriff yet and then he is in the other one, I'd guess that they were roughly 6 episodes they cut out of different parts of season 3 and split into 15 minute "episodes". And yes, they are 100% more enjoyable than "season 3", mainly because there's no palace scheming and fairly little obnoxious tang dynasty worship.

Well, that's the hope - that having the actors also spend more time together will result in believable and enjoyable chemistry. It mostly worked on something like the Candle in the Tomb series with Pan Yueming - they had the same actors for multiple seasons and that aspect of the show was always good. I was mixed on the music, but in the end it didn't bother me too often.

(apologies for a second reply. I think with these shows, I also appreciate when the actors (and script writers) give me something else than just the formula. Yes, the formula must work, but give me anything new, some spice (not THAT kind, but also that kind, sure ;P) and new look. Show me a small glimpse of the character I haven't seen before. I liked the unusually short Xiaoge in Ultimate Note, also because he seemed to emote and get involved in the banter more. Or the old Wu Xie in Bronze Door - I did not think I'd like the guy, but got converted over time. They even did it in this show - this gritty escaped convict version of Panzi was cool and interesting.)

It's not that I felt a lack of anything specific, rather that while it all more or less worked, at no point did their performances make me go "Hell yeah, the boys are back.". It's just been done with better acting and chemistry (Reunion) or with an interesting twist on the formula (Ultimate Note). I do think Xiaoge was especially wooden, even for this type of role. And like I mentioned, their performances were undoubtedly tainted by the ADR. It's somewhat attributable to this being their first time together in the story, too, but even so - individually they weren't the most-Wu Xie or most-Pangzi out there.
My excitement about this has fallen off somewhat. I think when the show moved from gorgeous real locations to indoor sets and stays with the younger actors while the older grittier guys left, it became less interesting. Also I don't like this actress for Ning - I always prefer when she's more fit and looks like an adventurer/mercenary. This Ning is too much of a model/idol.
There's technically a couple of prequels, but this is literally adapting book 1 and a bit of book 2, iirc. So you're perfectly fine just starting this.
I think my main gripe with this season are sound effects and music. The ADR somehow feels really badly done, like the dubbing doesn't fit the character or what they're saying very obviously. (or the emotions are weirdly off at times) And sounds are unpleasantly mixed - often too loud over voices, or they don't fit what's on screen. Music too can be inconsistent and strangely picked for some scenes.
