Gosh, this first episode was soooooo long and boring. I think we got not only the idea but also the feeling quite fast. The girl is sad about her ex-boyfriend. Past this point, it's just make it louder or filler. And then, nothing started yet. Not even something about SF concept as a cliffhanger at the end of the episode. I feel like I fall on these random overestimated dramas. Taiwan naive and childish acting don't help. I already know that, hopefully.
Historian of MDL is back! (you!) ;-) I will take a look at "writing articles", "sageuk" and "drama about drama". For this last one, it's a bit short, there is so more dramas with amazing real stories behind.
So, we will never see how deep was the attachment of the doctor to the little girl. The very little emotion that we could have felt is massacred. The doctor goes to the church to pray and what does he do from the point of view of the drama? blah blah blah. Zero emotions and no implication of his state of mind in relation to a reality. A reality that we were supposed to perceive and watch, not told. Even worse: A scene cut into 3 flashbacks (admittedly a good idea in this respect). But what is in it? More blah blah blah. Never any implication. Finally, all the depth is definitely destroyed by turning it into a comedy. Well, let's say comedy that falls flat, filled with unbearable fake tears. Sung Dong Il saves himself, while he helplessly witnesses his partner's abominable as well as deafening acting. And more blah blah blah about a situation never shown. All problems here are not even because it's slice of life.
End of episode 1. Pfuuu. Either I continue to watch this drama to dismantle all the blunders, as a personal education. Or I stop this torture now.
The scenes with people talking about people who aren't there keep raining down. Or talking about anything else. It's horribly poorly written. Timecode: 01:04:30. This scene for example. It's insane, barely believable from a writer who has written half a dozen dramas. We are supposed to see and accept the situations, to be confronted with the reality of the events, not to be subjected to such verbiage. No interest, whether it's for the understanding (null), the intensity (null), the quality of the dialogue (null), the information (instantly forgotten) or the emotion transmitted (null). Actors do what they can, I can't blame them... 2 min 15 of televisual nonsense leading to direct amnesia. To be put straight in the garbage.
As for the comedy scenes: everything falls flat. Bravo, to manage to make scenes of forced comedy without resorting to splastick, it is a feat!
I can't believe it : they use the same technique than Signal for scenes of the past. Compressing the picture, so there is no more normal ratio about size and larger. This way of rendering destroy expressions of faces and is the worst technique to use. Ugly, counter-productive, unreadable, It's quite a self destruction! The director or the guy doing the editing is mad. Is there a psychiatrist among all this bunch of doctors ?!
Heavy dialogs about some others people not in the room, with citation of their name. It make me realize how it's confusing and it give not to the audience a way to catch the situation or characters, while being boring, and doing a bad scene. I note this, usefull information! And there is a lot of dialogs like that, so much.
No plot, random situations, boring things already watched 100x in others medical dramas, and better done. No plot is probably the way is this genre, I guess. I even have difficulty to keep my concentration and read subtitles.
Of course, it's a classical exposition episode, so we have to see all characters, and it don't help with so much characters, and it become a mess. I suppose it get better later, and some situations evolve, but I'm not sure to reach this point.
We watch the life of these people, but I don't care about their boring life. Maybe I could be more into it, with a more documentary tone, but still, nothing interesting to catch us in the "story". Well, except a guy with dark vador helmet. Then doing operation with helmet. It's pushing the joke too far, is it really serious about medecine ?!!
Dialogs are so dull. All sound fake, even with so many good actors, and only Kim Hae Sook shine. Few emotionals scenes fail, with mother performing forced crying. Ouch, my ears! Is this thing going somewhere ?
In case I could still have doubts about that : slice of life are definitively not my thing. If I continue to force myself to watch this, I'll maybe discover a cultissim drama more boring than Goblin.

There are some of these mistakes that would be forgivable in a drama with a different main theme. But here, you are perfectly right. If the main theme is the hospital, the investigation work should be done seriously. The main interest of a drama taking place in a specific environment is precisely to get something authentic and instructive out of it! Also, it could make the story better, using some situations from real life.
I always watch SF. For example, I didnt watched Alice yet. There is bad reviews, but I'll still watch. I'm almost sure there is good things in it. Even if I'm disapointed during the show, it's not wasted time for me because I like the genre, and I'm curious to know how kdramas progress in this genre. By the way, I wrote an article about sisyphus but I don't know when MDL will publish it. It's more about that than an opinion article to say the drama is good or bad. There is already a well written article about that in the "currently watching" category.
If we look at big SF movies, there are only a very small part that are good if you look for hard SF. Star wars isn't really SF but more western in the future, for example. But it's not a anticipation of what technology could be. If you readed the whole Dune saga by F.Herbert, you know it make much sens because IA are forbidden. Hyperion saga is also more SF than what movies make. You get some better SF when it's immediate future because it's more easy to anticipate.
Many SF movies need action, fights. so a story like Elysium with Matt damon will get gunfight, stunts etc, it's SF but the SF part is a bit burried. This other movie "the martian" is great as both a survival movie and showing Mars, I don't think the ending stunt is realistic, but I can deal with that, it won't make it a bad movie, and an explanation is provided for the trick. If we go in this way, even the scene from 2001 when Dave come back in the starship isn't fully accurate. But nobody tried to do that in real life. And the director provide enough elements to make it acceptable, as part of air from the bubble go into the SAS.
Today I nitpick far less than in the past and focus more on dramaturgy and sufficient meaning. For example, during first episode of sisyphus there is a spectacular scene no much or no less than what you get in many blockbuster movies. But suddenly, I don't know why, dramas watchers (who spendt their life to watch kdramas with a big number of inconsitency) have a sens to say what's realist or not. How crazy is that ?! Ive made a complete decomposition of the scene, step by step, and actualy the writers did a job than others writers don't make in movies. Each step have trigers and there is a reason for all what we see. very good job.
Also, as a writer, I know one thing for sure : you have to decide. - Either you tell a story with a lot of plot-twist and it's impossible to make it fully believable, only thing you can do is to make the event chain logical. It's a fondamental law I experimented. My only goal (and also expectation when I watch a drama) is : don't be boring! - Either you write a pseudo documentary story with no crazy plot-twist, like movie Appolo 13, based on true facts. It's nice too, it's sharp, but you need a full movie to exploit one situation, when a breathless story with lot of turns and twist will give 10x situations like that or even more. So you need shortcuts.
You know, reviews arent always accurate. I didnt wrote one for this drama. If I read review and popularity, I will watch Goblin. I did, and it was the most boring thing I ever watched, so I dropped. ;-) I watched "Love in sadness" before to read any review. I loved it, and I was surprised the rating was so low.
Yes because the drama is serious, like Signal, it's dramatic, no comedy. So it's easy to "suspend incredulity". And the communication process is better used than in Signal. The drama is easy to understand. I'm at episode 12. Of course, the concept is surreal. It's not like people who build a timemachine like in drama Sisyphus. You know from the start there will be no explanation why it happens. But related to the story, you know there is a human link. If I want to nitpick I will say the small butterfly effects are not always take into account (some, but not all). When there is importance in the story, you see them, and big butterfly effects make the difference. It wouldn't be possible to tell the story with too much butterfly effects anyway, from the narration point of view.

People who get angry, make false accusations, judge on incomplete basis, shoot insults are weak. They don't even have a moral compass and are desperately trying to find one for futile cases. There is a correlation between their fears and the things they denounce or are indignant about. It's just a reflection of their own deep-seated insecurities and behavior. We can see that those who spend their time judging bullying cases act exactly the same way. They are willing to bully anyone else who gets in their way, hopefully with just words. This is the dark side of themselves that they refuse to admit. So they try to exorcise it by choosing an external target.
You know, it's exactly the same things as the characters of Penthouse. So Jin spend her time to accuse others of what she do. Writers know that, basic reversal psychology. As a writer too, I often feel like I live in a world of blind people. But I know I'm just one-eyed.
