Let me elaborate. When I say not meant for this earth in no way am I suggesting he was right to end his life. There are personality types who have difficulty manipulating the world we live in. It's the world that needs to change. You see people like him are akin to the canaries in the coalmine-they are the early warning system that alerts us to life being toxic.
Many of us are trying to make sense of this tragedy. I know I want answers. Recent photographs of him showed he just was not himself. He looked pale and gaunt. He was clearly looking exhausted. I believe two forces collided to make his life miserable. His life as an idol where his management could work him to the bone and create a revenue stream that Haruma would see proportionally little. Japan is known for its culture of overwork. And one does not complain about it. Idol wannabes are a dime a dozen and clearly interchangeable to management.
Then the Coronavirus hit. It meant an even more isolation for those in the entertainment industry. Because they are so highly recognizable, there's no escaping being seen. And in times of a pandemic as an idol you cannot afford to be seen not obeying social distancing rules. and self-isolation. (We all saw what happened to the four K-idols who went out for dinner, Having to write a letter of apology to their fans must have been humiliating. For the record, the edict to stay home had not been announced at that time.)
The other consequence of the pandemic was that avenues of stress release were closed off. Haruma loved to surf and he had not done so in months. It was one of his favourite ways to let off steam. Meeting friends with equally crazy work schedules was not feasible either. Loneliness hollows you out.
Haruma had a few projects on the go and added singing to his plate. Was it all too much? Again, I am haunted by his appearance of late. He was on a talk show a month or so ago and he said something telling "that every citizen had something they were trying to get away from ." I am unaware if the subject of the conversation was mental health or not.
Due to the circumstances surrounding his passing ( I won't elaborate but there were a few) in my heart I feel his work / life balance was to blame. People in the entertainment industries in Asia desperately need unions to ensure no more mistreatment can occur. I wish I knew what it would take to get artists to finally rise up and fight to be treated with fairness. If Haruma's passing is not enough of an impetus, I don't know what is. Perhaps the public needs to boycott the works of vile agencies until their culture of abuse is transformed.
