I've figured it out ---->>>>>> You need to watch the movie before watching this for these episodes to make any sense.

I'm watching the 1st episode now and it seems to be going into depth about aspects of the development of the couple's relationship, after they've gotten together, that we weren't able to experience while watching the movie. It's almost like omitted shorts (they're too long to be considered scenes), which enhance their romantic story, but weren't included in the movie as it wasn't necessary. It would only bog the story down. Theses shorts don't add anything to the overall story itself or fill in any blanks or anything like that.

For example, in the movie there's a conversation where the FL's brother gives the ML a hard time for still calling the FL by her last name - he teases him questioning the fact that he even knew her first name - even though they were already dating. He then tries to get him to say her first name and he struggles to do it. That's about the extent of the topic (plus a little but not much). The first episode here (of the series) is all about them going through the process of beginning to refer to one another by their first names.

EDIT: At the end they show clips of the cast inviting viewers to watch the movie coming out in theaters, along with previews from the movie. It's like this series was all to promote the movie?? I REALLY just don't get it.

Title Brother's Friend Spoiler
Is this meant to be a mini-drama of the movie (telling the whole story all over again but in greater depth)? Or…
In the movie the SML did some extremely shitty stuff and nothing whatsoever was done to address it or even acknowledge it by the end of the movie. The couple didn't even discuss their issues and the FL was completely left in the dark about the SML in the end. There's stuff that the ML doesn't know he did too. So no one knows how bad he really was and he just goes on all hunky dory?? In fact, if anything, the FL would have thought he was a good guy since he's the one who finally pushed her to go talk to the ML in the end. That doesn't sit well with me AT ALL.

As shy as the couple is they never even really held hands but she's HUGGED the SML thinking it was the ML (and it was a very intimate conversation and experience too) and by the end of the movie neither of the leads are even aware of it? In this kind of super-innocent romance that's a HUGE deal. Yet, by the end of the drama she still thinks that all happened with the ML and he has no clue about any of it or the things she said thinking it was him.

I get that maybe they want us to assume they talked everything out and resolved all of those issues and concerns - I'm referring to them talking things through and figuring out all that the ML had actually done - using the excuse of time constraints of being a movie but they could have spared 30 seconds to address it properly. Instead not a single comment, interaction or even behavior was included to lead us to believe so.

It wouldn't have left me so irritated and frustrated in the end. They get their happy ending but nothing was resolved even the slightest.

I just watched the movie and won't waste my time on this if it's not about what happens after the movie. I'm not interested if it's the story before they get together since the movie handled that well enough. I'm also not interested if it's just a more detailed retelling of the story told in the movie.

I had issues with the movie though that left me very disappointed. VERY. So I don't want to see a longer version of the same thing.

This SML was actually one of the worse I've seen in a while. For a drama that was clearly meant to be light and cute he did some really ugly and dirty things to break up our couple. He kept saying he was serious about pursuing the FL but never even let her know how he felt about her, focusing only on provoking the ML and getting between the two. Just because he finally did the right thing and prompted the FL to talk to the ML in the end, doesn't make him likable or a nice guy, or even redeemable in my book. He just grew a damn conscience.

The fact that they never really talked through their issues and misunderstandings or acknowledged/addressed the SML's behavior and involvement by the end of the movie made me not be able to like it as much at all in the end. It was cute and sweet otherwise but that left too huge of a blemish on the experience for me.

I LOVED IT!That was INSANELY GOOD! I did NOT expect to like it this much even though I've been impatiently waiting for it to be subbed - something I haven't done before - because I was so looking forward to watching it. The acting, special effects, all of it was superb.

Having no prior knowledge of the story I'm completely satisfied with the story as is. I haven't seen the anime and I haven't read the manga so there's no previous standard in my mind which needed to be met.

I get that compared to the anime version it's not as good but what you can accomplish in an animation vs live characters is just unrealistic to compare. Plus, of course, the time limitations of switching to a movie format. I do also understand the wants of those who've watched the anime and or read the manga though. It's the usual response when such stories are made into a movie. It's impossible to capture all the key elements and achieve the level of satisfaction viewers hope for. It literally never happens.

I'm fine with it being a movie though. Only because I'd hate to be let down by the team's efforts to extrapolate the truly key aspects of the story to achieve the powerful emotions and reactions I did while watching this movie version. I'm not saying that it's not possible to pull of a drama version well - in fact, if done right it could be epic - but more often than not we're been let down in that regard so I'm satisfied with what I've been given.

NOTE REGARDING THE ENDING: I just scrolled back to comments that were posted like 4-5 years ago and apparently this drama was originally meant to have 45 episodes, not just 40. It seems like they just abruptly stopped airing the drama at ep 40, leaving many people confused. That's just based on what I've seen here though. I suspect those with more direct access to Chinese news at the time may know more.

I wonder if it had anything to do with the pandemic though. That was airing right at the peak of it wasn't it???

Honestly, I'm not really one to make comments even though I read them. But having lack of any comments on Qiu…
I'm so glad you posted this as I hadn't seen anything else that would have prepared me for such crappy behavior and I hate going into a drama thinking it'll be light and fluffy only to be blindsided by the kind of behavior you describe.

If you can’t separate actors and characters. Simply do not watch dramas. If it makes you feel better, they did…
I'm late to reading these comments but my first thought to your comment was, "who cares if it makes them feel better?" Someone who behaves like this person did is too pathetic for me to bother trying to rationalize with. I say that with utmost sincerity. If they're going to take issue with something so stupid they really aren't prepared for LIFE in general. Wish I had seen this sooner so I could remind all the rational people who tried responding to this idiocy, not to waste their time. It's pointless attempting to communicate with someone who'd made such an ignorant comment in the first place, and one who'd make an issue of something so utterly foolish.

But you watched it right? The whole thing? Maybe give others the opportunity to do the same. What does this comment…
You guys are purposely misinterpreting what this commenter means. They're saying that instead of just telling people not to watch something maybe try explaining WHY they don't recommend it. If they're not going to bother explaining why they wouldn't recommend it they shouldn't bother posting a comment at all. Just saying "save your time" doesn't mean anything. It may have been a waste of time for that commenter but why are they assuming it would be the same for everyone else? A more helpful approach would be to include a reason WHY they've recommended avoiding it.

That person may as well have said - I didn't like it. The end. What's the point of a comment like that?

No one's saying not to share your opinions but at least help us understand your reason for having that opinion.

Title Sweet First Love Spoiler
who tf is the writer of this drama? a kind of masochist?
LMAO!!!! I haven't watched it yet but I saw the episode summaries someone wrote and I've never seen anything like it. It's like each episode contains so much...shit..that it could be it's own entire drama. It's sooooo convoluted with terrible characters doing terrible things, constantly, and a whole bunch of love triangles and unrequited love and cheating and like every possible trope you could think of all thrown in..repeatedly. Does that sound about right?

It's been on my watchlist forever but I've never been mentally prepared enough to even consider actually starting it after seeing those episode summaries.

Based on the second review above the romance is very slow-burn. How slow are we talking? When do they get together?…
Oh noooo! That's terrible. Dang. I appreciate the heads up!

Ohhhhh! They definitely haven't shown anything like that maybe that's why I didn't catch on. Okay. Thanks for explaining.

Still. People get offended by some truly irrelevant stuff sometimes. I mean, if there wasn't so much other serious other stuff constantly happening all around us in reality then maybe I'd take offense to something as simple as that in a drama but to also take the time to cause an uproar about it. I just don't get it. I see something offensive, I may get worked up, yes, but unless it's some seriously crazy shit I either move on or I don't watch. Especially when it's a situation where it seems genuinely unintentional (I'm not saying that was the case here as I wasn't following the issue) but due to a lack of cross-cultural awareness. But do you seriously mean to tell me at a bar in NY you'll never see a muslim man sitting next to two hot women???

Don't get me wrong. I don't mean to undermine what offends different people because based on my race and sex we get it from all sides so I know it's not that easy to brush off. I'm not trying to be insensitive. I do think that people tend to be TOO sensitive about things sometimes though - especially when the whole REAL world is a big gd mess. Why even dwell on something so irrelevant. Some people just have too much time on their hands or their lives are way too stress free.

Anyway, I'm moving on. I don't want to get caught up in some complex conversation about this with anyone on here.

Thanks for taking the time to explain and for not doing so in an attacking manner.

I don't care what anyone says. So far I like this Arab guy. He's hilarious!

Why. WHY would anyone get worked up about the way that man was portrayed?! He was an adorable person? How do you get offended by that? I'm not trying to be offensive or inconsiderate but nothing stood out as being any different from anything I've seen in any non-asian drama AND they guy was really NICE! It's not like they were trying to diss the culture in any way!

I grew up in a country that had a very heavy muslim presence so I'm not unfamiliar with the culture (although I don't know anything about Arab princes themselves) but I cannot see how the way the character was portrayed should be taken as offensive.

I'm a black female living in America. I know offensive tv. It just baffles me to no end that people would take the time to get upset about something like this where the man's character was that of a total sweetheart - a funny one no less - but turn it into something negative.

That's just my 2 cents. I don't need anyone to agree or disagree with me as no one is going to taint this great character for me by bringing their negativity my way. I'll just block or ignore you. There's enough ugliness in the world without people trying to make ugliness come out of something good.

I put this on hold midway into ep 7 a while back and just started watching it again now. I already burst out laughing…
Thankfully, later on in this episode we finally get to start seeing her be genuinely sweet and friendly towards the ML a bit.

I put this on hold midway into ep 7 a while back and just started watching it again now. I already burst out laughing again a couple of times in the past few minutes so I'm glad I've picked it back up.

It seems like I'm the only one having a particular issue with this drama as I still don't see any comments where others seem to feel the same way.

Here's the thing, I'm still having a difficult time liking the ML's assistant. He can be funny enough, yes, so I've genuinely been trying too, since the beginning of the drama. However, he's always so inconsiderate towards the ML, who's done nothing but treat him very, very well all along. It's been a source of irritation for me with the FL too. The ML is literally the only person she's rude and inconsiderate towards no matter how many times she realizes he'd done something good/positive for/towards her. It's not once or twice from either of them. It's been ongoing from both.

I read a comment somewhere that the romance starts early in this drama. It's almost midway but the FL has barely even begun being nice towards the ML, so I'm confused about what's considered 'early'.

Thanks sooo much for this post! Would have been completely blind-sided, and disappointed, by the love triangle otherwise. I'm also glad you explained how long it lasted and the effect it had too. Posts like these are a godsend!
