The first 2 episodes of Run On was weaker than Start Up, but there is a stronger foundation in Run On, and assuming the writer doesn't falter, Run On has the legs needed to easily surpass Start Up.
Too bad most people only focuses on the first few episodes. The last few minutes of Ep. 2 had my heart fluttering for 10-15 minutes straight. The part where they just ask each other about their respective crafts, felt so comfortable, as if they have known each other for years and years.
I wanted to edit the current synopsis of the show. Can you guys give your opinion on this one, I feel it's pretty accurate and spoiler free? Thank you!
Start Up is a show about how 30 year old HS teenager Nam Do San's attempt so lose his innocence card in fictional company Sandbox. Tired of people pressuring him for his genius intellect, he dreams to one day find someone who loves him just for his big hands.
Tired of using letters to fill the hole in her soul, Seo Dal Mi yearns to find something real and bigger to satisfy the needs in her life. After happily working in retail for the last 15 years, she finally finds a rich and successful guy so she doesn't have to anymore. Will this "Rich" guy help fill the holes in her resume?
Nam Do San's journey to completion is blocked by savvy investor Han Ji Pyeong, who is the owner of the letters. The two men competes on who deserves the right to reach completion of their goals, and to help fill the holes in Seo Dal Mi's resume. Will HJP's letters be enough? or will NDS big hands provide the perfect fit for SDM's dreams?
Oh yeah, TKEM was not a good drama. Start Up is a lot better. And yes, terribly predictable and cliché unfortunately.
I suspect the triangle was suppose to end earlier but KSH rising popularity had the production drag it until the end to make sure people watched till the end.
Ratings still dipped anyway in Korea last 2-3 episodes.
Not only do we agree, we have written thesis papers, essays, and books about it :)
I love Gong Yoo! But finding a good place to watch it is so hard. My computer has so much trackers and cookies already LOL! But i've seen clips of Hello Teacher and Baby Gong Yoo and GHJ are just super adorable!
I atleast give a drama 4-5 episodes before dropping it... Some dramas are slow burn and some ends up being really…
I may end up finishing Run On, if the quality can keep up until the end. Very interesting, and after watching Start Up, seeing what actual chemistry looks like is refreshing.
I wanted to write my episode 2 review, while it is still fresh in my mind. I have to say Ep. 2 of Run On is a…
I was looking for a drama to watch after the disastrous Start Up. And run on was recommended by some, and since it was on Netflix I decided to give it a try. I am not familiar with any of the cast members. So this would be my first experience with any of the leads. My first impression of Ep. 1 was not great, I wrote a short review that highlighted rushed pacing, confusing plot, and unlikability of the ML due to his eccentricities. The only thing I liked about the Ep. 1 was the FL, I thought she shined the brightest, and had the most interesting character arc. In fact, I wanted to drop Run On after episode 1, but I always told myself to give dramas at least 2 episode to grip me. I am glad I did, if Ep. 1 was the episode for us to get to know the FL, Ep. 2 is the episode that we get to know the ML.
There is a scene of KSG running towards OMJ and missing her when he is running at breakneck speed. Then on his run back, he slows down his sprint and is able to meet her. KSG in his initial sprint, sees OMJ, but he runs past anyway. I think this perfect describes Ep. 1 and Ep. 2. In Ep. 1, we are rushed through the show at breakneck speed, where we only barely get glances of the different plot, characters, and issues that the show will contain. Almost as if the writer wanted to bombard us with all these information. And then in Ep. 2, just like KSG slowly running back towards OMJ, the audience is walked back towards the characters, plot, and issues from the first episode, but in a slower, and more methodical way. This slower pacing, made us realize the many things we were missing in the first episode. Clarity started to enter into the characterization of the ML and FL. Color was given to what were once drab side characters, and the track that the writer intended for us to walk, becomes clearer. From a rushed sprint, Ep.2 bring the audience experience into a gentle stroll.
I have to applaud the acting of both ISW and SSK. What I found initially to be weird in KSG's blank stare in episode 1, became endearing in Ep. 2. The amount of effort ISW puts into his role to maintain that same blank, uncaring stare for a majority of the episodes is just amazing. There is nary a micro expression to be seen as he communicates with the many different side characters in the show. The blank stare, which can only be described as his defense mechanism, is further supplanted by his righteous nobility and straightforwardness which is refreshing to see in a ML.
Just as KSG explains, that the reason he runs is to get past the one in front of him, we see this parallel in his everyday actions. He doesn't spend time mulling, and overthinking situations. In some ways, he acts on impulse, when his principles and morals are treaded on, he just rushed forward. It's an interesting dynamic given that unlike other ML's he keeps that same blank stare while acting on impulse. What makes his blank stare even more powerful, is when he drops it. After seeing almost one hour of that same blank expression, seeing that facial armor break at the end of Ep. 2 made my heart flutter.
I reviewed TKEM, and in that Kdrama, one of my biggest grip was how rushed the love was. So seeing OMJ and KSG kiss in just the first episode, you would think that I would criticize this. But, this is not the case at all. The amount of chemistry that SSK and ISW share is just hot as lava! Seeing two people, from different background, speak the same language, but at the same time constantly misunderstand each other was such a fresh take. The actors did such a good job in showing their confusion when talking to each other, but at the same time we see that abject curiosity they each had for the other person. And by the time the kiss came in Ep. 2, it made total sense in my mind.
It became clear to me, what attracted them to each other. For KSG, it's curiosity. For most things he doesn't know, he just googles them, and he easily finds out the answer. But enter OMJ, someone he doesn't understand, but at the same time, she is someone who intrigues him, from her quirky nature, interest in guns, and interest in subtitling, she is an enigma that he is curious about. Whether this is love is kind of yet to be show IMO. For the moment, I believe it is curiosity more than anything.
For OMJ, with the bits of information that Ep. 1 and 2 gave us, we have the feeling that she hasn't had the best life. Constantly being looked down by men, not really appreciated for her work, she lives for the simple joys in life. Which is Yook Ji Woo, and seeing her name at the end of credits. In a lot of ways, since her real life is nothing special, and very harsh, she often puts herself in a dream state. An assessment she propagates by that scene with the earphones where when she listen to the music, it's like she's floating in air and seeing the world with rose colored lenses, and her beliefs in fate. I believe her main intention with KSG goes beyond curiosity and physical attractiveness, she believes that since they had met three times before, maybe fate is telling her something. This would fit her romantic persona, and that is why she is so curious when the fourth time happened.
What I also enjoy so far is the depth and complexity that the SML and SFL have. They are not just your one toned side characters that you do not get invested in. After Ep. 2, I want to find out more about their backgrounds, potential issues, and possible love line. Also I would like to give a shout out between he budding bromance of OMJ and Mrs. Seo, it's incredibly cute! And I love that the writer added eccentricities even to the side characters.
All in all, a good start, and I implore everyone to watch Ep. 2, then rewatch Ep. 1. By doing so, it improves the quality of both episodes, and makes a lot of things so much clearer. I am certainly looking forward to the next episodes, and I hope that this drama that has such a good start, does not flounder in the latter episodes like other 2020 Kdramas.
For the people finding this boring, believe me, I was one of you, but having a deeper understanding of the intentions of the character, and the deeper complexities of the ML and FL has made Run On very interesting to me.
I wanted to write my episode 2 review, while it is still fresh in my mind. I have to say Ep. 2 of Run On is a stark reminder why we should always give new Kdrama at least two episodes. My Ep 2 review will be long, so I hope people take the time to read it. I want to share with all, why I think Ep. 2 completely redeemed the confusing Ep. 1.
I just have to say, after being disappointed by Ep. 1 of Run On, the second episode was just amazing, and made me see the first episode in a whole new light.
Run on so far, doesn't have the highs of the first 6 episode of Start Up, but from my opinion, it has all the necessary tools to end up being a sleeper hit for 2020, assuming that the series continues it's positive trajectory.
The chemistry of the ML and FL is better than that of Suzy and NJH. It's a must watch IMO for those interested in a light romance.
I'll place my Ep. 2 review on the Run on comment section in case anyone is interested to read.
Although I agree with you regarding the immaturity of SST, I do want to touch briefly on why NDS was immature…
Although the immaturity of SST is a bit exaggerated, there are many Asians in their 30's who are still quite immature. And a part of this is unfortunately because the parents do support their children until they are married. There is nothing wrong with this, but if the child, lacks the necessary social skills to learn from outside their familial circle, immature 30 year olds are the byproduct.
did you like hello teacher?
I really want to watch Mr. Queen also, I heard its hilarious.

Nope, crazy romance not on Netflix.
I would suggest new people to watch Ep. 2 first then Ep. 1 afterwards, it's a game changer.
