You are scaring me with this new persona...What did you do to gsgg and who are you?
Fans in general would have less issue with the script, if the love triangle ended around Ep. 7. and focused more on the business aspect, and Won Injae's proper return to her family, not the rushed family reunion we saw in Ep. 15-16.
Yes, I agree, they didn't show enough reasons of why SDM loved NDS, nor do we understand why NDS loved SDM for that matter. I mean the only thing we get from NDS is that SDM is beautiful, seems quite superficial to me.
And of course lastly, give HJP a proper arc. He was in much of the first 6 episodes, with arguably a stronger story arc than NDS. To see him sidelined, and end up still being alone, is a bit cruel from the writer. Especially since HJP was not a bad guy.
I hope the younger people who viewed Start Up, realizes that all the family connections in the drama are not healthy. Do not think that this type of family connection is normal, especially in Asia. This is just my opinion on how I'd like my family to be.
Here are the things NOT to do when your a 25+ year old.
1. Ignore your parents for three years, when you travel or immigrate somewhere. At the very least call them once on the weekends.
2. Do not blame your parents for how you turned out, nor should you . It's nor fair to them, nor is it fair to you, as you subconsciously limit yourself because you feel you can blame your parents for your mistakes. Unless of course they actually do something malicious that ends up harming you.
3. Do not tell your parents that you don't want them to be their pride, or don't want you to be their pride. For asian parents, especially the more traditional ones, they sacrificed their whole lives to make sure that you end up being a good egg, and if they want to brag a little about it, or be proud of their children, let them be. It's one of the few things asian parents subconsciously dream for their kids.
4. Don't blame your parents for pushing you in your studies. For asian parents, education is very important, and the more potential you have, the more they will push you to maximize your potential. If you are overwhelmed by the pressure, talk to them properly, you'll be surprised how communication trumps rebellion. You'll be surprise at how much your parents may understand.
5. Do not treat your family home as a boarding home. Your family's home is not just a place for you to crash, and eat. Your parents worked very hard to provide you with a comfortable place to grow and live. The least you can do is spend a little bit of time enjoying it with your parents.
6. Your parent's are not your personal ATM machine. Although I know it can be difficult psychologically. But when your parents give you money, or invest in your future, you should treat that money as more important or equally important as if the investors are from Black Rock Capital, Berkshire Hathaway, or other large investment firms. Unlike large investment firms, your parents are giving you money they have saved up and worked hard for, and have no backup plan or insurance for when that money is wasted or disappear.
I've noticed that the negative reviews on the the review section are being blasted. There is people implying that the negative reviews are either:
1. Not to be trusted. 2. Bias because of a ship
Number 2 is simply not true. And number 1 doesn't make sense. You can't say a particular review is misleading or dishonest if reviews are by definition subjective.
So I created a set of questions to help you decide whether or not to watch Start Up
1. Do you like Nam Joo Hyuk?
If yes, you will like this, because he features a lot in the show.
2. Do you like Suzy?
If yes, you will like this, because she features a lot in the show.
3. Do you like strong independent women?
If yes, you will only like Kang Hanna scenes.
4. Do you enjoy love triangles?
If yes, perfect, because this show makes the love triangle the focus of the show.
5. Do you like Kim Seon Ho?
If yes, then this show launched him to overnight Hallyu status.
6. Do you enjoy learning about business and tech related things?
If yes, this show probably does not have too much information about this compared to others.
7. Do you enjoy family dramas?
If yes, then this show is not the best at portraying healthy family relationships.
8. Do you enjoy HS dramas?
If yes, perfect, there is a lot of immaturity and teenage angst to fill your need for HS drama.
NOW, if you've decided to watch the show. Here are some information for you to know.
1. If after 2 episodes, you are loving NDS character, then that is great, You will enjoy the show.
2. If after 4 episodes, you are not liking NDS character, then that is bad, as it doesn't get better from here.
3. If after 6 episodes, you feel you are falling for HJP's character. Come back to this comment section for some support.
4. If after 8 episodes, you feel your heart dropping, and you feel lost with the direction of the show, then know you are not alone.
5. If after Ep. 10 you really dislike NDS character, then you can consider dropping the show after the end of ep. 12.
6. If you finished it and loved the show, that is great, leave a comment, or write a review. But by no means should you attack, ridicule or shame other commenters who did not like it.
I'm sorry to keep going on about this but let me give one example of why I think PHR is not to blame.Remember…
I see... I see your point. I just wanted to bring up the butchery of the original play Cyrano, which I have always loved.
Anyway, in the end, this will be a black mark on her resume. This will also be a bad mark for NJH as well, as people got seriously annoyed with his character.
I'm sorry to keep going on about this but let me give one example of why I think PHR is not to blame.Remember…
This is my first PHR drama, so I don't know if symbolism and metaphors are par for the course for her writing. I don't know if she has a history with misdirection.
All I know is she took a source material, and ended up butchering it, and is paying for it with the massive SLS being experienced by a lot of people.
I mean, i'm not arguing with the signs pointing to Jidal endgame, i'm on the same boat.
I hate to say it, but in the end, it could just be a possible red herring by the writer. I don't know why she would do it, but she may have left enough crumbs/clues for a Jidal end game possibility. Its like she covered all the bases just in case.
I've read the theories, and I agree with most of them. And I still don't understand how Jidal wasn't end game. But as i've said before, because of the way SDM's character ended up in the end episodes, I am happy HJP didn't end up with SDM, but I wanted a better ending for HJP.
I mean come on, HJP literally told SDM, her letters brought him comfort. And she is just tight lipped, no emotions. He didn't deserve the ending he got, but i'm glad he didn't get together with a selfish, clueless, and shallow person like SDM ended up being.
Come on stop making issues with this tags both sides,it's getting pretty ugly now.dont make it even more ugly.lets…
Your right, I would just ignore them as well.
But they should at least put love triangle, because there is one, and it eats up most of the show. Some people who consider the tags before watching, should at least have that warning.
Were you here when the drama was still airing? If you weren't, then you missed so much honestly... If you like…
This brings back memories! LOL!
The good old days!
Link back even further, the analysis and theories were really on overdrive at the beginning before ep. 7
It's nice reading some of the older comments. This comment section brought happiness to a lot of people with how active it was, and how much content it produced :)
I'm sorry to keep going on about this but let me give one example of why I think PHR is not to blame.Remember…
I agree, that episodes 1-6 pointed to an HJP end game, especially knowing what we know about the source material. And it's very possible that things were changed to reflect possible scenarios to make Dodal more acceptable.
My point is this, regardless of what PHR changes in the script, it's clear that HJP Is meant to be Cyrano, and NDS is meant to be Christian.
Christian's weakness has always been that he has a simple mind, and is not very smart. He is just attractive. Also, his other flaw is that he is bad at expressing his feelings.
PHR wrote NDS character to eliminate both of these issues from NDS characterization. Unlike Christian, NDS has genius level intellect, and also unlike Christian, when it comes to SDM, he has no problem expressing his love for her, nor at finding the words. These are two things that Cyrano is supposed to have an advantage compared to Christian.
These changes in the context of Christian, makes me think that PHR has always intended to give NDS more depth than Christian in the Cyrano play.
As the spirit of Cyrano begun to haunt PHR's script, she knew she had to make the end game couple clearer, thus we get the additional dialogue and kiss scene you mentioned. But it is too late, because all the factors of Cyrano had come out of Pandora's Box, and PHR tried all the remaining episodes to put it back in.
Park Hye Ryun made the big mistake of disrespecting her source material, and what we see is the aftermath of her mistake. What do I mean? Let me explain.
It is clear that PHR used Cyrano as her source material. There is a plethora of literary works, thesis, papers and etc… done on the play Cyrano, showing the symbolism of many things in the play (Big Nose being one of the important ones), the moral, the intention and etc… But I think PHR didn’t bother reading through it, and instead, took the synopsis of Cyrano, and wrote aspects of the play she liked. And this was her mistake. PHR butchered the spirit of the play Cyrano, and is surprised when the ghost of the play came back to haunt her script.
It was like her taking the story of Star Crossed lovers Romeo and Juliette and choosing to make Juliette fall for Count Paris instead. It doesn’t matter how much you butchered the characterization of Romeo, and made Count Paris, especially desirable, the fact that Romeo and Juliette are star crossed lovers, will always get more people to root for Romeo over Count Paris.
And this is what I feel we are seeing in Start Up. The foundation of Cyrano: 1. The letters 2. The hidden love of HJP for SDM 3. The way he protects her 4. The way HJP allows his “Big Nose” (his Good Boy Persona) to be a barrier to his love for SDM 5. The way he was willing to be selfless all the way until his demise.
This kind of strong foundation is near impossible to break. The writer chooses to copy the foundation of Cyrano, and in her hubris feels that she will be able to break this foundation, and make people root for Christian (NDS) instead. She even gives NDS the literal “Big Nose” of Cyrano, by marking it as “Big Hands” instead. Which is funny, since Big Nose was one of Cyrano’s most defining features; this doesn’t change anything though, by giving HJP the foundation of Cyrano, there was no real way that people would not fall for HJP’s character.
PHR thought that if she removed Christian’s biggest flaws, NDS would be more palatable to the masses. Christian’s biggest flaws has always been his weak, simple mind, and his inability to express his love. So when PHR created NDS (Christian), she chooses to shore up these weaknesses. She arrogantly thought that if she gave Christian, Cyrano’s strengths it would logically lead to a believable Roxanne and Christian endgame. But that’s not how writing works. There is a reason people roots for Cyrano, and it is the reasons I mentioned above. PHR did not respect these reasons enough, and that is why Start Up ended up being what it is.
You can destroy the body of a play. But no matter how unrecognizable the adaptation is, the spirit of the play will always live on through the characters. Which HJP has proven time and time again.
Yes, I agree, they didn't show enough reasons of why SDM loved NDS, nor do we understand why NDS loved SDM for that matter. I mean the only thing we get from NDS is that SDM is beautiful, seems quite superficial to me.

Too bad you weren't in the comment section during the live airing. It was a very fun time.

I think Suzy is unaffected, and KSH benefited.

SDM from the early episodes? Absolutely!
Oh, I lost everything.
It won't happen this time.
Oh, dear... it happened again
WELL this time, it will be different.
Hmmm, oh hi NDS, you can count cards? Perfect!
