Title Motel California Spoiler
Just finished episode 4 and honestly, Kang Hee really needs some serious mental health therapy. She’s nowhere near ready for a healthy relationship. Her past pain has made her so self-focused that all she sees is her own suffering. Instead of addressing her emotions, she’s trying to shield herself by hurting others first. It’s like she’s blind to anyone else’s feelings.

She disappeared for 10 years and yet her old friends are still quite kind and welcoming. Meanwhile, she’s acting like she’s the most miserable person in the world. She’s stuck in this victim mentality, constantly wallowing in her misery and it’s clear there are deeper issues she’s not dealing with.

And don’t even get me started on her telling people her very alive father is dead ..that’s just bizarre. If she had a bad relationship with him, I could maybe understand, but that’s not the case. Sure, the village is full of gossiping busybodies, but not everyone is like that. her dad and old friends genuinely care about her. Yet she treats them all with the same cold, dismissive attitude. It's hard to sympathize with her at this point.

Why is she acting pissed, hurt and jealous seeing him with another woman, after SHE rejected him?! I sincerely hope they don't get together, when he is doing all the courting and chasing... I want her to be the one chasing and actively trying, after she rejected him >_<

I really can't root for such an unbalanced relationship.

Just binged the first two episodes and now I’m on episode 3. Really enjoying it so far! :D

I can't fully grasp yet why she despises everything about her hometown, but I’m guessing there’s more to her story that hasn’t been revealed yet.

And about the whole appearance dilemma... sure, she has lighter eyes and a few freckles, but it’s not like her look is dramatically different. But people are sometimes insufferable to the slightest difference, so maybe it's not too far-fetched...

And oh man, I felt so bad for Cheon Yeon Su. He’s too good of a person. He honestly deserves someone better... I don’t dislike Ji Gang Hui, but I can’t say I particularly like her either, at least, not yet šŸ˜… Let’s see how things unfold! :D

I love him, the crazier the better🤭. But I get why others can't take him too🄓.
@Mileruichi Your perspective on his character is so beautifully written and insightful. It perfectly captures what I felt but couldn’t express so eloquently!

I think, if it was a secondary female character who is breaking up the main couple just because she couldn't handle…
Ah, okay! "Hate" is a strong word, after all. We’re just watching for some entertainment, right? šŸ˜‚

I’ll definitely keep your point in mind when watching dramas. But can you actually think of any FML second leads who were written as complex as TM and still received a lot of hate?

While we’re diving into this, I feel like many FML second leads are often written shallow, which makes them easier to dislike. Male leads tend to be written with more depth in general. So, while I do agree with your point, I think this might be another root cause of much of the hate. It’s often the stereotypical ā€œnice second 2MLā€ and the ā€œevil, jealous second 2FL,ā€ where the character is almost designed to be hated.

In TM’s case, though, he’s written as a complex, multi-layered character and I can’t really recall a second FL with that level of complexity who still gets so much hate.

I’d be curious to hear your examples :D

Just rewatched some scenes from ep. 31 and I'm still whole-heartedly enjoying this drama. It’s such a treat to find one this good and I also like our passionate and lively comment section hehe

We all have different opinions, but that's what makes the discussions so enjoyable! Even when things get heated, I've had nothing but respectful exchanges. Just wanted to take a moment to say thank you and I hope everyone has a wonderful Sunday ā¤ļøšŸ˜Š

I still don’t think this is directly relevant to my comment, but thanks for sharing your perspective :D I mean, should I start hating on him just to make it "fair" to all the second FMLs out there getting hate? Personally, that's not a mindset I’d want to push for myself.

We’re talking about a drama here, but even in real life, I’d try to avoid unnecessary hate. There’s already enough of it in the world, right? šŸ˜…

As for the SML, I actually haven’t seen much support for him. Sure, people pity him, but actual support? Not so much. Pitying him isn’t the same as supporting him. I probably sound like a broken record, but I don’t condone his actions, I just pity him.

Funnily enough, you could say this about all characters in general. If the ML was ugly, old or anything else that didn’t fit the typical ideal, people would probably start rooting for the 2ML and get hit with second-lead syndrome.

As humans tend to be shallow, this kind of logic applies to every character šŸ˜…

Kangaroo Logics Lmao..So because he don't have something, he have to go steal it or force it to be with him wether…
Of course! That’s just how opinions are. Also, part of the fun is venting about it, right? No hard feelings here, just passionate opinions! Haha šŸ˜‚šŸ«¶

Yes, I believe so. She also didn't star in that many dramas yet. TTEOTM is, where I first saw her.

His loneliness is his retribution. Sympathyzing him is equivalent to justifying his actions. We should not romanticize…
Funnily enough, I’m not a big fan of Xianxia genre overall. I’ve only really enjoyed about 3 out of all the ones I’ve tried. I agree that reincarnation is a common and often overused plot device in Xianxia, but for me, it’s the way it’s handled here that stands out. The emotional depth and the exploration of this grand, messy, interconnected story. So far, it didn't feel like a web, that traps itself, to me.

That said, you’re absolutely right. Stories resonate differently for everyone :D

So, while your point about double standards is valid in general. Where does it correlate to my comment? šŸ˜…

Tho I do agree, fml 2nd leads often face disproportionate backlash and that’s unfair. But does that mean we should pile more hate just to even the scales? The better solution imo is to extend the same grace to all complex characters, regardless of gender. Let’s critique their actions, sure, but also recognize their humanity (or in this case, their immortality 😜) Well, just my take on it :D

His loneliness is his retribution. Sympathyzing him is equivalent to justifying his actions. We should not romanticize…
I get where you're coming from, but let me respectfully counter a few points :D

First off, sympathizing is not the same as justifying. TM’s actions were wrong, no argument there. But recognizing why he did them and feeling for his plight doesn’t mean I’m endorsing manipulation. It just means I’m appreciating the complexity of a character who isn’t purely evil. That’s what makes a well-written antagonist stand out imo.

Secondly, yes, fiction can influence people, but it’s also where we explore messy, morally gray areas without real-life consequences. Xianxia dramas, in particular, thrive on these dramatic, over-the-top storylines and we as viewers know it’s not a guide for real life. TM isn’t a role model, he’s a cautionary tale wrapped in heartbreak and tragedy.

Lastly, while karma is a powerful theme. Ironically "Book of Fate governs karma". He created his own suffering, but that doesn’t mean we can’t mourn the path he’s taken. It’s possible to acknowledge his flaws, condemn his choices and still feel sadness for his fate. Fiction lets us do that :)

You think the plot is stupid because of its genre. Fair, Xianxia isn’t for everyone. Funnily, Xianxia genre is not even kind of cup, but there are some gems out there, imo, like this one. At the end of the day, the beauty of fiction is that it sparks discussion like this one! 🫶

You are right he is pitiful. To be alone is a curse, I can barely survive right now, imagine an eternity. But…
Yes, you understand what I'm saying. His actions are wrong, but I still can't hate him, because I find him pitiful.

Also the story is far from over. I'm pretty sure his karma will come...
