In English you can just say "son-in-law" and "spouse" without implying the gender of the direct subject, but that doesn't really seem to be possible in Chinese.

媳妇 (xífù) is also the word WSW uses when he visits his parents' grave later and talks about Chi Cheng. It's translated as both "wife" and "daughter-in-law" on Gaga. So I think this is just how they would refer to their partner in front of their parents.

After last week, I decided to give it one more episode to get some answers. But this episode was nothing but even worse writing than last week. No clarifications, just attempts to smooth over and find excuses, "there's always a reason", and Knight saying "it's not the whole story" means that it actually happened, he just had... extenuating circumstances? Sorry, but there are no extenuating circumstances for outright SA and r*pe. This is not the kind of ambiguous situation where people might have misunderstood or misinterpreted what was happening. This is too frustrating.
And Mild, being told that he's a "coward" for not being able to face his attacker and then letting him kiss him and hug him... no, sorry, that doesn't really make any sense at all, unless, you know, THEY ARE IN FACT ROMANTICISING A R*PIST. And the promised explanation? Nowhere in sight. I don't think I can put up with more of this purely out of hope for a clarification that might never arrive.

If this was the kind of dark series where everyone is more or less twisted, I might have been able to stomach that, but here they are trying to make it an emotional journey or something, without even getting any of the emotions right. Nothing makes sense. I was going "wtf" throughout the entire episode. I just can't.

40 full-length eps per series/season (for anything other than an ever-running soap opera) is standard only in China, I think. Even Korean series don't tend to be that long, and Japanese series tend to be 8-16 episodes at the most, and often with a shorter runtime as well. Even American TV series don't normally exceed 24 episodes per season. With streaming based series these days they are sometimes much shorter. The reason is the huge Chinese population, no other country has a viewer base that big, so they can afford to make dramas with that kind of length.

Thank you! I'm always interested in the hidden layers, the hints and aspects that tend to fly completely over our heads as western viewers, simply because we don't have the cultural references.

It definitely got much better in episodes 3 and 4, it feels a lot more coherent and there aren't so many confusing time skips and flashbacks.

Because it was submitted to the Chinese censorship board for airing in the Chinese mainland. This means that when it was shelved, it can't be aired anywhere else either. This drama was never intended to air in the Chinese mainland, only overseas, so it hasn't been submitted for review. But you can also tell that the budget is very low, because of that.

Actually, the "daughter-in-law" thing might be a translation issue? Because if I understand it correctly, Chinese is very gendered when it comes to familial relationships, they even have different words for getting married depending on whether it's a man or a woman who is doing it. So "daughter-in-law" is often used to designate "the wife of your son" even if that person is not in fact a woman (or what we in English would call "wife"). But WSW clearly took that as his mother wanting him to marry a girl, so he replied about having kids etc, just to please his mother (even though he already knew that he probably would never marry a woman and have children of his own blood).

In China dates are given in the format YEAR/MONTH/DAY, so 06 means June and 23 means the 23rd of June. If it mentioned the year it would have said 20230623.

They do, but it's actually very well done, it makes sense, unlike a lot of other romance drama plots. Misunderstandings is one of my most hated tropes but here I actually didn't mind it so much because there were legit reasons for it, it wasn't just thrown in out of the blue for random drama.

He does have some psychological issues, but I also think it's a personality thing that gets exacerbated by his mental issues.

Yeah unfortunately the snakes play a big part in the plot so it's hard to cut them out and not have to rewrite the entire storyline. But it's sad for people who can't handle watching it because of that.

You calm down. I did write above "if you can", but you probably didn't read that comment. I just mentioned that Dailymotion is not a legitimate platform since a lot of people actually don't know that.
Illegal platforms might help these actors be known around the world, but I doubt that will help them much since they live and work in China. And how are overseas fans the ones who struggle the most? We can watch it on the official platforms and are free to use VPNs without having to be sneaky about it. Chinese fans are the ones who have to struggle. But they also cannot watch it legally, which is why it's important that we overseas fans do, IF WE CAN.

Dailymotion is a pirate site. The official platforms streaming it legally are RevengedLove YouTube, Gagaoolala and Viki. Only views on those platforms will support the series.

Please watch this on the official platforms if you can in order to support the actors and the production team. Watching on pirate sites will not support them at all. They worked really hard on this and took a huge risk to defy the government ban on BL. Only we overseas fans can watch this legally,they are relying on us.
