the ending itself is kinda hard to explain if you don't watch it directly (it depends on the person if you'd see it as bittersweet or tragic). but basically in the last episode, the fl died and the ml was left alone for years until he finally willingly left joseon (meaning he died too). but it still ended beautifully imo.
Just now I watched an ost of trs on youtube. I played it and when Deokim running around the palace appeared before my eyes, I started bawling my eyes out. She was smiling so brightly. I couldn't even remember she was that happy.
Since when has everything changed so much? I just realized now that everyone, everything was so different from how it was before. They used to be so youthful, with not much to worry about. Just bickering with each other, Yisan making fun of Deokim as he pretended to be the gyeomsaseo, Deokim being as cheerful as ever. It was very heartwarming how they were always there for each other, especially Deokim.
Yet all of that disappeared as they started to grow up- setting their own priorities, realizing the reality and the consequences of their decisions, putting a wall between each other and the latter trying to break it. Why did they have to be born so differently? Of all things, why did he have to be a king and why did she have to be a court lady? Why did they have to be born in that period? It aches my heart how things can never go back to the way it was before. Everything that has happened when he was still a crown prince, already feels so vague because my heart is now clouded with all the pain and grief I felt from the last episodes.
The palace is really, the most cruel villain in the story.
Also anyone please suggest more royal dramas apart from moon embracing the sun, tail of nokdu,100 days my prince…
six flying dragons - political, but the enjoyable kind of politics because it covered how goryeo was overthrown and how joseon was made. this also has the best swordfights i've ever seen. all the main characters are very admirable.
mr sunshine - set during the japanese occupation. based on true events in history. women empowerment here (the female leads are so cool). my #1 fave sageuk. also has impeccable cinematography
dong yi - this could serve as a prequel to the red sleeve. the female lead is the mother of king yeongjo who started off from the lowest class (which if u remember it was mentioned a lot of times in trs how he was looked down on because of his mother, but she is endearing). so the leads are basically the great grandparents of yisan.
empress ki - the female lead is so badass. polygamy is also portrayed well here
queen seondeok - kinda similar to empress ki, but i admired the antagonist here the most. the ones who are opposed to each other are both women and it's more of battle of wits.
They really showed well the real story and ending while also came with their own ending. But was it a dream? Kinda…
he died. deokim told him to go back 3 times and this represented how the head eunuch would have to plead for the king to come back three times when he dies. he was also about to die before he came to that place, and he had the chance to come back to life by opening the door- but he chose to stay there and leave joseon forever. as the ending says, "and soon the moment became eternity", because he never went back to the real world.
does nobody think that the vibe is getting similar to moon lovers:) I'm not at the end yet but based on the comments…
for me i don't think it's necessarily similar to moon lovers because the red sleeve focuses on the harsh reality of women inside the palace despite having romance in it (especially in the last 2 episodes). tho there are a few parts that might indeed remind you of moon lovers (although it didnt happen to me hehe).
yall how am i supposed to move on. last night when i was trying to sleep lee sunhee's ost kept playing in my head 😠i woke up with a very heavy heart i feel like i was in the story and experienced the tragedy myself
just realized we reached 9.0 ratings !! absolutely deserve. make sure to mark as helpful those reviews which you think will help others know what kind of drama it is.
absolutely!! i love the director of trs so much. i thought no one can beat lee eung bok in terms of cinematography in dramas, but director jung ji in seems to have a chance to surpass him. i'm actually surprised this was the only work of her that garnered attention
i think because the writers and director of the drama are women, this makes how the drama express women's struggles back then a whole lot better. they really did a great job, they depicted completely how harsh women's reality was in joseon, especially in the palace.
i saw someone on twitter say, the main villain of this story is the palace. and that hit me right there, all the villains went and left after their part. there was never a character which could be considered as the main antagonist. but the palace was there all along- the palace's policies and restrictions are what made everyone miserable.
gonna miss commenting here 😠trs was the only drama where i engaged in the comment section of mdl. i hope junho and seyoung really reunites in a romcom drama and we'll see each other again
the red sleeve beautifully portrayed the reality of joseon era. the harsh reality of polygamy and life in the palace. i don't think i've ever seen a kdrama portray the struggles of various types of people living in joseon as well as the red sleeve does. from the queen dowager who was trapped inside the palace, the king who was a son of a lowly maid, a man who wanted his sister to reach the top of the pyramid, a court lady who wanted death inside the palace, a princess whose son died in her stead, a king who had to fulfill his duties no matter what, and of course, a court lady who only wanted freedom.
they ended the drama in the most beautiful way possible. the writing is not perfect, but it did an outstanding job in making the drama exquisite and impactful.

"The palace is such a dazzling prison."
