There are lots of BTS with ML. They got along very well. Here's a compilation of a few of them.

I thought they were sharing reassurances to each other that they had her best interest. Can SML really defy his family? He doesn't even speak up when his mom bashes FL in front of her. SML asked him if he thought of how Ming Shu would react, Lu Chang answered SML that he lets Ming Shu decide and that he would never betray her. I don't think answering his question with conviction instead of a wishy washy way is arrogance.

Why would the villains let SML into the jail when they planned on poisoning her? Contrived plot to get them together. Lu Chang came because he's been working on a way to get her released legitimately instead of a prison break which automatically incriminates her.

He has no right to tell Lu Chang to do anything. He knows that if Ming Shu has her memories she would be even more attracted to Lu Chang.

Episode 19-22 were great here because he actually got screen time and to see his acting. Is it too much to ask that the ML have screentime?

But you really should check out his other dramas. Every character is different from each other and different from himself.

SML almost lost an eyeball bulging out when he saw Ming Shu with Lu Chang. Dude is amping up his injuries for attention. I think Lu Chang is more annoyed than jealous by that antic. But I am so ready for this triangle to be over.

Such a multi-tasker. He saved both FL and SML today.

He was truly trying to get sand out of her eye and she's having feelings. Finally we got some scenes with them together, alone. (But I spoke too soon, they aren't alone anymore).

He rescues her in jail. Man always gets things done.

He jokes that his career is on the line, so she shouldn't try to escape. Maybe that would keep her from putting herself in dangerous households.

There were some sweet moments from Lu Chang and Ming Shu in Ep 26.

Sacrifice. He's always wanting credit for every little knick. 🙄

It's pretty blatant. Sign falls, have you ever seen a drama where the ML rescues the disgusting villain and SML rescues FL? ML dives on 2 people and nearly misses being crushed, but he has no injuries with the debris right there but things fly up to scratch the one exposed body part of SML? Physics. 🙄

"I should thank the guy who punched me". Yes, thank the self-inflicted wound to get her attention.

"This injury is worth it". Yes, keep milking your boo boos for credit.🙄

Does it make sense for them to put a male with a female in the same cell? Even if you bribed the jailer? And you didn't bribe them enough not to poison ya? Why would the jailer accept SML's bribe when they know what they plan to do? It's so contrived to put him with her and give him something to do.

It's nice to have an older romance but please limit the triangles. Wei is very nice.

We know she has no interest in him but he's everywhere. Today's first scene in Ep 26, every one is wearing official uniforms but he's there to get close-ups when Lu Chang is taking to the other guy. Why?

And you also need production not to cut out all the eye contact when you actually have scenes. In Episode 25, we finally had the scene that we should have seen in Ep 10. She looks at him during calligraphy. But it's a memory flashback. 😡 There's been so many instances like this that I am starting to feel catfished.

He doesn't get credit for it at all. And he doesn't let others tell her because he doesn't want her to worry or feel in-debted to him.

He asked to help because he had nothing else to do. We see him alot. He has scenes with ML, with FL, with his family, with his page boy, with him by himself looking for something to do.

I think you missed the point about archery. It's not that I care he taught her, it's that this is the kind of behavior that SML would think it's not proper for the ML to do but it's OK for him to do it. I personally think it fine for either, but SML wouldn't. He got crazy eyes when she was measuring ML's neck for clothes.

He was going to go to Wei house before he knew she went there (because he has an active investigation), but her there, he definitely needed to go since he knows she put herself in a dangerous situation.

And I am not denying that both are good men. It's not character assassination to point out human flaws and inconsistencies.

That's why it's frustrating for me to see a fluff character when the main CP, family, and 2nd CP barely have screentime. He had an epiphany in early episodes that he's interested in politics. But he never did anything to show he's working on learning it. If a character has no substance, he's extraneous.

I didn't read the novel, but those who did say SML has a lot more story than the novel.
