Thanks for all the great sources! That will help me out a lot, I really appreciate it! :) And you are right, I also trust CNN, as well as the BBC :) Thanks a lot again!
I am very grateful that at MDL there are people who give more attention and effort to dig deeper information about…
Hi, thanks for the great info :) Do you still know where you read the interview in wich the Sep. 12 incident was mentioned? Also, do you by chance know the name of the Daum series? Thanks!! :)
Very True! I did not mind any of what I discussed here while watching the show. And I did also not really plan…
I have never said it is hell. And I also never claimed that it is currently dealing with a Civil war. Also, you are critiquing an article that does not yet exist lol. I will compare the show vs reality, that also includes similarities, which there are, like i said before, a lot of. It'll be a comparison article, not a "everything little thing about NK sucks" article. Also who is "painting a grim picture"?

Yes, they did have North Korean defectors working on the show. And the decor is very accurate too. I never claimed that people there are constantly sad and/or unhappy, yet this show makes viewers feel this, just like it said, nostalgia. Now, you might know more than the average viewer, however, how will someone that doesn't know much before going into this show go away from it? That's what I want to focus on. Because while yes, people in North Korea also live their every day lives, it is not just this "happily sitting at the fire with the nice soldiers and actually friendly government spies, eating delicious traditional foods" all the time either. And from what you said, you know already know that too :), yet others might not.
Thank you for providing us with such detailed research. Now, we all know that all dramas are basically fairy tales…
Very True! I did not mind any of what I discussed here while watching the show. And I did also not really plan on writing this much on those topics. I just ended up going deeper and deeper as I was writing. I had originally planned to write about the differences between real North Korea vs romanticized show NK. I hope to address that more in part 2 of these articles. Fingers crossed I can find good enough sources :D
The whole drama is very unrealistic but non the less it catches one with its sweet and funny moments and makes…
Oh yeah, I agree it was a good drama! The reason why I first wanted to write tihs article was to look at how the show portraits NK vs how it actually is there. This show romanticizes North Korea a lot, even makes it look like a nice place to be, which it (sadly) isn't. I just planned on pointing that out, but then I fell down the rabbit hole of "How did she get there?", which is how the first installment ended up like this.
What an interesting topic. Superb analysis as well. I never knew there were actual cases of people flying into…
Thanks :) Yeah, I originally wanted to focus this article on how NK is portrayed, but I then ended up being sucked into the rabbit hole of how she actually ended up in NK in the first place :D I hope to focus the second article more on the NK fiction vs. reality aspect. :)
Well, I was afraid for such kind of article but since you did it, accept my two cents as well.As I said, earlier…
Yeah, originally I did not plan to go into any "Plot hole" or illogical type issues. My original intent was to look at how this shows portraits North Korea, as many people that watched this show, probably didn't have a ton of exposure to NK. They might therefore get the wrong idea about it, because the show definitely romanticizes NK a lot. I then ended up going way down the rabbit hole, which is how we ended up with this article - lol.
As a graduate student in research, I deeply appreciate the kind of efforts that you have put in! Quoting the sources,…
Thanks! :)
You're right, I think they did mention that the power failed. Totally forgot about that to be honest. I will try to keep this series going. But things will certainly slow down further into the show, as it becomes much more tornado-less :D And of course during the "in Seoul" Episodes, there won't be much to talk about in general.
I'm a couple months late due to completely missing the article back when you wrote it, but I wanted to tell you…
Hello! What a nice surprise to see a comment on this article, even though it has been out for a good while now :)
I am very interested in trying out the 2 movies you mentioned, because most of the books that I read only briefly talk about the assassination in the beginning, and then move on to the events of May 18th.
I will also bookmark "Korea: The impossible country". A post war history book sounds great, because I am more interested in that period of Korean history. Do they also talk about North Korea in it?
I hope Pil Jung doesn't give up on her only dream for the kids..
I'm pretty sure she won't, as this is still pretty early in the show, and they would have to scrap a ton of the current story lines to do so. The track and field team, the principal vs Pil Jung feud, the house hindering the redevelopment, the Eun Joo being jealous of Pil Jung and Seok Jun, Doctor and Pil Jung and pretty much everything with Yoo Kyung. And since he's also allergic to dogs, which makes Min Ji dislike that guy, I would guess it won't happen, and if it does not for very long. If i had to guess, i would say that it will be a hard decision for her to make, Min Ho will again be mad, and that's that. But if they do end up together, i doubt that it would last long, because we also see Seok Jun beginning to like Pil Jung. However this could also be where the whole affair thing comes in. Anyways, that's just my two cents lol

LOL, do you already have a drama in mind, that would be deserving of such a title? :D
