I guess they will film all the outdoors scenes in Huangshan and then move to Hengdian for the indoors scenes. However, I have no idea what the proportion of time spent in each location will be.

Not really, just fewer scenes of the main couple saying sweet nothings while the OST is playing (boring!) or Prince Xin agonizing over the past. As much as I loved Jeremy’s acting, the character had a much more interesting storyline in the novel. It was equally tragic, but in the end he found redemption (and became the tutor of the FL’s son, the young emperor).

I read that the director’s instruction to the screenwriters of Chasing Jade was that only the couple relation needs to be well developed and logical, not any of the political background. This nicely summarises what is important in idol dramas: Actors’ looks are more important than acting skills and everything except the couple relationship is unimportant. Serious dramas on the other hand are driven by the plot and the acting skills of the cast.

Yes, most of the characters were written better in the novel (and Prince Xin wasn’t an obsessed love brain). The whole plot was much more intriguing with the old conspiracy around the emperor’s rise to the throne as a thread that connects everything that is happening. In the drama, villains pop up episodically without being connected to the larger picture and it feels totally random. I guess once again the screenwriters thought that all the political machinations were too complex for the audience, so they removed them and replaced them with sugar water. With the way they keep doing this to so many dramas, it isn’t any wonder that the industry is in a crisis!
You can blame the scriptwriters who seem to think that everyone still wants to see this type of obsessed third…
I don’t know for sure. They still have his picture up on their Weibo (trying to bait interns into working for them 🤬), but they are no longer involved in any publicity for his roles. He has re-taken control of the studio and seems to be making his own decisions regarding roles. However, in the current climate it is incredibly difficult for people like him (not a traffic actor, without capital backing or a powerful agency) to find decent roles. During his birthday livestream his first comment on the past 12 months was “I still have work.” which gives us a glimpse at the struggles that must be going on behind the scenes. Even if this role as Prince Xin wasn’t exactly what fans wanted to see (many have expressed their wish for a different type of roles in the future), the buzz that it created may be just what he needs to get some better offers that, hopefully, will allow him to move beyond the idol drama genre.
