My youngest brother, who doesn't like watching Asian dramas, is watching this with me and is loving it. He knows all of the reference being placed here before even I did. He would try to guess what happened in that year and what Do Jun will do with it.
I finally finished this yesterday. It had a lot of little moments that stood out from being average to me. It's rare to come across a show with good sisomance. The sisterhood between Yan and Changge was done exceptionally well with how they are forced to split apart but one fondess stayed while the other, forced to let it out and their trust in each other came through at the end, helped create many diplomatic solutions. Also Le Yan's character development bloomed beautifully. She really gave me aspirations to start writing again. She is my favorite character of the show. Hao Du's and his relationship with father touched my heart. Just seeing his father, at the end, try to pave way for his foster son actually made me cry more than anything. I can tell Hao Du is distant with his own feelings and behaves in a way that seek approval from his father figure because he is painfully aware he is a Foster son and not his actually son. I also enjoyed the Master character lmao him trying find discipline but can't get the approval of one despite being a master marital artist is kinda hilarious. I wish we saw more of him.I also enjoyed General Li Jing and Sun's partnership. I wouldn't have minded seeing a whole arc about these two playing chess and strategizing. It was one of my favorite moments.
The only thing I wish the show did NOT DO was let us, the viewers, know Changge's revenge was misguided from the start. It sets the wrong tone for the rest of the episodes because I, as a viewer, was not waiting for her to get her revenge. I was waiting for her to know the truth and she only finds out the truth at ep 40+. I don't know why the writers or director decided this was a good writing direction. It would be so much better if we were as misguided as Changge. However, I do like the message of how revenge isn't the answer because it can lead to more suffering.
I also wasn't a fan of some of the writing in the late 20s early 30s and 40s episodes. The conflict in Tang had me sighing more than I can count.
I'll end this on a good note and say the children actors were so good. The bratty Crown Prince and the Princess of Monan were amazing. Their acting felt very natural. I also found out this wasn't Dilraba's actual voice. Her actually voice is pretty cute.
Oh wow I never knew saving someone's life was ever considered unhealthy. Thanks for letting us fans know.
I didn't watch with my eyes closed just because I donβt share the same opinion as you. I already said I respect the fact we have different views to the other user but y'all can't stop feeling triggered by the fact someone may not like what you like. Of course that's how you see it. She can do all that because Sun save her each time which lead her for no consequence of her action. Again, that leads her to act more outrageous because her mistakes is covered by Sun. She should pay him back by saving his life, it's the bare minimum for what he had done to her lmao Soenone told me to put a trigger warning so I will go edit my comment for y'all .
I don't know about whether it is a healthy relationship - I think this term is overused to such an degree it had…
Fair enough. I personally didn't find the animation a problem but I've talked with someone who did. It was such a big issue for them and thanks to her, I see where the frustration come from. I agree that she is not a strong actress but I would blame some of it on the writing too. Like you said, the contrast between is so stark and I do think it's because the way it's reciprocate is so different.
So I've seen 8 eps, and I might be stirring a pot seeing how loved this show is, but nothing happened much in…
Good thing you wrote this months after it finished otherwise, people would have flooded your comment. You said Shounen, I know exactly what's your problem with the show. It's power scaling. I don't think anyone who reviewed it mentioned it but the show kept coming up with techniques that are apparently difficult to master but you find out suddenly. Plus the male lead just master it fast which makes it harder to sympathize because you already know it's gonna happen in that very episode. They don't give room for you to understand how the powers work, they just come up with it as the episodes come out..
Just my opinions:I knew that the FL was 15 in the start of the show, but considering everything that happened…
I also scratched my head at that. I thought time have passed and she also would be 17-18 but considering the era, I let it passed. As for the male lead, she actually isn't in love with him yet despite everything that happened and actually confronted him about it. That's why I like this drama. One of the things I found interesting was the dynamic of mature and immature. Some of her decisions really shows she is young (when you see S2 you will understand). I found it abit frustrating because the ML obviously is mature and he is right but the FL isn't. She have her own version of what is right. However, it's strangely appealing because they are both doing what they think is "right" and as viewers... unfortunately, we know he is right more than she is π€£ but I can't say I'm not surprised since she is still 15-16. Lots of room to grow.
Oh wow I never knew saving someone's life was ever considered unhealthy. Thanks for letting us fans know.
You forgot the part where Changge begged Khatun to be involved. You can't tell me I'm being seletive when you are being selective about her mistakes. There is nothing to twist. She had no plan. Her plan was depending on another person and somehow she thought that would fare well. You see it as "mistakes" that will help her grow. While I see it as selfish act that lead to more deaths. And her trust to believe a stranger over Sun, who helped her, is very telling. I'm surprised you can say that as if you don't realize that mistrust is another reason of unhealthy relationship. Of course we won't come to an agreement when we see it COMPLETELY different. And it's fine. I don't need your validation so don't seek for mine. Be comfortable with your own thoughts without trying to force others to have the same thought process. I already explained and my explaination have solid foundation.
Oh wow I never knew saving someone's life was ever considered unhealthy. Thanks for letting us fans know.
That was the halfway through mark. I wasn't hating on them from the start. For me, this was a dealbreaker. The fact even when she didn't know that was his mother yet she still risked her life. For someone with a savior complex, she should have never involved her even if she didn't know her identity. And I like how you said she had no plan π thanks for bringing out more of her flaws. And I'm at 34 now, and I find it very amusing to know the female lead ignored Sun's warning and it turned out he was right. It reinforce why this couple just ain't it. I'll end this by saying Ashile Sun's is a great character. Changge, however, isn't.

No, it's how one sided it is where one is giving too much while the other doesn't. Plus she caused the death of his mother by involving her in her very flawed plan. Even if Sher didn't hold her hostage, I AM SPEAKING politically here, Khan would have not only possibly executed his mom for helping a traitor but also and Sun for ALSO helping a traitor. Female lead ONCE AGAIN, leaves with minimum damage out of the MERCY of others. So in conclusion, miss me with that bullshit. I'm entitled to not fancy a character whose only growth seems to be when people die. It wasn't your dealbreaker but it was for me.
Hi. Can you explain politics vs war vs romance. How many percentage is it in the drama?I skimmed watch some earlier…
We might need to take this to DM π
The series is becoming more and more of a chore now for me. Li Yan is my favorite character so I'm going through it for her limited scenes. I might not be able to finish this at this stage. I can't believe people say this is better than Love Like The Galaxy.

Since the two seasons got two different main leads, I can watch it without worry about missing details from long breaks.
I'm not a romance freak. I can enjoy a story without. I just wanted a breather moment from heavy politics and romance usually do that. In The Long Ballad, the romance is kinda ruining it for me so it definitely need a good balance.
I was told to put a trigger warning so here is the trigger warning for anyone who likes this drama. It contents different opinion than the average viewer. You been warned. Read by your own discretion that it's not something you will like. Thank you for your time.
23 episodes in and I just don't feel any chemistry or even care about the main leads in the slightest. I think I can officially say I hate "two opposite sides lovers" trope thanks to this drama. Everything about this trope is soooo one sided. One is so self sacrificing, giving, and rescuing while the other is constantly sabotaging it, putting their lives at risk and even acting foolishly. The only reason the female lead is even alive at this point is because of the male lead. The fact people see this and think it's a healthy relationship is stunning. I understand the female lead have goals and the male lead made his own decision to be sacrificing for her. I understand the concept but I don't support it nor do I find it romantic. They are one of the worst couples for me. I'll continue for all the other aspects that isn't romance.

I can see how much you love it. It seems very political but does it have a little bit of romance? I mean even if it doesn't, I'll still watch it but boy... it's over 100 episodes π€£ imma need some commitment. I'll take a bit of a long break from watching Chinese drama before I start that one. Should I wait for season 3?

If he watched then he might be able to let it pass. Which one did he like the most? I heard Nirvana in fire was good but I haven't seen it yet. He ain't wrong about Korea. Most of their dramas are palace politics and not general.
They definitely took a easiee route for this. Even some of the simple scenes they took it easy lmao I guess they don't want to spend much.
Oh yeah, Wu Leo was gorgeous. They hair/wig really looks good on them.

The list of shows are growing π€£
Can't do much about it now
PLEASE I aslo laugh when someone is wildly unamused about something. It's just funny.
There are some nice wuxia scenes but I feel like female do less and less of that as it goes on.
