I needed non of the information from Mystic Nine. It made the story more confusing. So for me it was definitely an unnecessary side quest. And this gave me more information for Zhang Hai.

So instead of watching Mystic Nine, I should have just watched this. Because it looks like it'll answer my questions from Zang Hai and Nanyang. It appears that I have taken an uneeded side quest.

I believe so. I have started the 2016 version yet and it plays out much like NanYang Archive. So I don't think you need to watch the other one.
