So I watched it and it's not that bad. Jung Jae Young's acting is a bit over the top, but the rest are suitable for their characters.
the story had its charm for me, as I used to work as a journalist, but it might be a little boring for most people (not that much exciting investigative reporting going on).
But it's still am ok watch, esp. if you are a Park Bo Young fan,

TO THOSE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE AGE GAP: ARE YOU SERIOUS?!? I don't really think age is an issue when it comes…
Hello!
- Agreed: fictional characters can be seen as models! But for that you still have to relate to some extent...seeing as we are talking about a witch marred by a curse, born from a ghost demon, I dare say no sane Korean teenage girl will choose Yeon Hee as a real life role model...
- the possibility of what we see on tv SLOWLY changing one's principles is such a vague assumption, that I fail to see the URGENCY of people deeming THIS particular drama inappropriate; why not worry over every single drama out there? There is plotting, revenge, bullying, heavy drinking, discrimination based on financial and social status, parents abusing verbally and phisically their kids and an endless list of other harmful behaviors present all over dramaland, yet no one seems to have a problem with that; isn;t this a double standard?
-if you know what I mean wasn't irony directed at you, it was sarcasm toward Korean girls who all dream of marrying a chaebol son someday; hence the :P, meaning I was joking, but I see you cannot debate without getting emotional and taking it personal after all, too bad.. I've already said "I am open for debate using sound arguments, not emotional reactions!" So yes, let's better stop the discussion! Enjoy the drama! :)
TO THOSE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE AGE GAP: ARE YOU SERIOUS?!? I don't really think age is an issue when it comes…
There are several issues that have been raised in the comments and my post was not tailor made for each and every one of them (even though, for the record, I am always open for debate using sound arguments, not emotional reactions). However, if you really paid attention to what I said, I clearly stated "I don't really think age is an issue when it comes to THIS SPECIFIC actress". Meaning I was looking strictly at the decision to cast KSR in this drama and the potential implications involving HER.
This is "Mirror of the Witch" drama page, hence the place where i thought we were talking about this particular production and cast, story and characters. If anyone wanted to debate the GENERAL PRINCIPLES of public figures vs. normal people as role models, the influence and extent of impact mass-media has on different age groups of consumers, the perks of being an underage entertainer part of nowadays showbiz system, the legal and moral implications of pedophilia or any form of minor/adult relationships in real life, the Korean culture of seniority (hoobae needs to humor/respect his sunbae) and gender discrimination, the rates of criminality targeting minors in South Korea and so on, well, that is what the MDL forums are for, or each of our individual feeds, we can always start a debate with our friends there and see where it goes. BUT, since we are posting here, I was under the impression we should comment ON TOPIC and save the offtopic (non-drama related) "hot" issues for elsewhere.
Was I wrong to assume this? If this was a news article about the "possible" casting of KSR and YSY in a new drama, I would welcome all these topics and debate. But this is MOW drama page, all is already set (the cast, the script...), so I really don't see the point of flooding the comment section with all these irrelevant (as in off topic) and most of all, futile posts. It is defeating the purpose of this page.
The fact that I mentioned all her past roles was to address the "concerns" of those arguing about the emotional/psychological impact playing this role will have on Kim Sae Ron. Do you really not see where I was coming from?!? I was talking about 2 major differences some people seemed to ignore:
-being an average Korean teenage girl involved in a relationship with an adult male (in 2016 real life in Korea) VS being a teenage actress playing the role of a perfectly normal girl involved in a natural and common age appropriate relation (at that time frame);
-being an underage rookie actress paired, for the first time, directly with a 30 yo sunbae as romantic interest VS being an experienced actress who's been around industry as long as her partner has and who has already mastered way "heavier" characters
First of all, even though a quick search here on MDL tells you she is 15, in Korean age KSR will turn 17 year old in two months (precisely the age of the character she is playing, 16 going on 17). So let's stop stressing the 15 figure! I know it sounds better than 17 when you make it your point to depict someone as immature as possible, but real age can't be changed to accomodate our purpose.
Secondly, half of those years she has already spent playing characters that could have taken a far worse emotional toll on her, had it been true that she worked with quacks, instead of professional film makers and actors. Seeing how well she's doing, I guess both her parents and her agency are not so careless as some might make them sound (cough*this is pedophilia in disguise, pimping young actresses*cough). Meaning not only the actress, but also her adult legal guardians have already read the scrip and deemed it suitable BEFORE she took the role. Meaning even if we don't trust the genre (sageuk) and the medium (tv), we could perhaps give her parents the benefit of the doubt?!?
Now, from your reply, I see that you are adressing a completely different issue, not the impact playing the role could have on KSR. Even so, I am a bit confused about the point you are making:
"I feel a bit uncomfortable with the age gap in this drama... due to different context, purpose and target audience...this drama is light-weight, has romance and many teenagers will see it. I don't mind age gap in itself ...What bothers me is that teenagers watching this drama, who already idiolize actors, will see (probably, drama hasn't finished yet) an actress with their age (around 15 and 17) in a relationship with a 29 years old man (well, because we know fans will search the age of the actor they like). Given the popularity of Korean dramas, they might see this as a normal situation."
On one hand you talk about the role model status of real life public figures (what my idol does must be good for me too). Meaning you are refferring to KSR and YSH and their fanboys/girls, correct?
On the other hand you talk about the characters they are playing We know for sure she is about to turn 17, but how about him?Maybe I missed this detail, but his actual age isn't mentioned anywhere in the drama. We know he is the younger out of wedlock son of that family, but I am almost certain he isn't supposed to be 29, because his older legitimate brother should have already been married by then (and he is not, on the contrary, is introduced as a "young master" always fooling around). So in the end we have your regular appropriate relation for the time and place our characters are set in. Add to that the whole fantasy element and you have a set of completely fictional characters with no resemblence to real life Korean couples of 2016.
So, see my dilemma? What exactly was your concern again?
If KSR was dating YSY in real life, you might be somewhat worried that their impressionable fandom would come to see this kind of age gap as desirable. But this is not the case and I am pretty sure in the very particular and rigid Korean star system, such pairing is highly unlikely. Even mature actors postpone as much as possible their dating/marriage news, to avoid losing fans that no longer fantasize about them. Younger ones? Maybe when hell freezes over, trust me.
So then are you saying that young drama viewers would watch Heo Jun and Yeon Hee fall in love, and, with all the hanboks, magic and "vodoo" stuff and whatnot involved, would somehow in their twisted minds think that their idols KSR and YSY, aged 17 and 30, are dating for real? And this will make all those 2016 Korean girls go out in the streets trying to hook up with 30 yo men? Really? sorry, but this is asking me to take a HUUUUUUGE leap of faith here. So no, unless you (an impersonal you, not you Kestrel) are intentionally trying to troll or blow out proportions this whole casting situation, nope, there are no such risks involved. Of course this is my humble opinion, everyone is entitled to their own. But I can assure you that vicariant learning doesn't work that way (it's not as simple as most of you wanna make it sound).
Food for thought: how come those Korean youngsters are not all alcoholics, seeing how in every drama you get to watch the characters drown themselves in booze, the minute they have the slightest problem? There are far more frequent examples of other inadequate behavior in your average drama than a witch princess falling in love with a slave illegal son. So unless the pd-nims are running out of bratty chaebol sons, I am pretty sure the Korean teenage girls will still rather fantasize to be Candy, not Lolita :P (if you know what I mean)...
The Whispering Star was originally created and screened as part of an art exhibition which had the theme of dystopia running through it. The film was shot in different locations in the Fukushima prefecture, turning depopulated and irradiated areas into a futuristic landscape that speaks of hopelessness, pollution, and abandonment. It stars people who live in the areas and Sion Sono’s wife.
