Want to hear your conclusions on the ending too 'coz am I right in my own conclusion based on my understanding of this cdrama that my answer is yes and no?.....
No because remember in the 1st ep of this ADWAD cdrama Nan Feng ( who now we know is also only a fictional Big shot Actor character from the true and original "A Dream within a Dream" script who is supposedly gonna play this another fictional male lead Nan Heng character in "Dreaming in Qiming " script ) was still his original arrogant Nan Feng the fictional actor's self then, 'coz remember Song Xiaoyu ( the fictional actress character in this fictional modern script world who will play the female lead character Song Yimeng who is inside of also another historical fictional script world ) has not gone and time traveled into that historical script world yet , so you could say this newly lovable, changed and improved fictional male lead Nang Heng character didn't form and existed yet...he is still a character in paper only and is still in the works yet.
And also Yes.... because when Song Xiaoyu had already time traveled into that fictional script world and triggered into motion all the changes to form this newly improved narrative of the old ridiculous and haha cringey 1st original script and now that this newly improved fictional male lead Nan Heng already knew and understand that they were fictionalcharacters in a fictional script world, then and only then did Nan Feng the actor became the male lead Nan Heng but only at the end of the episode of this ADWAD cdrama when the original script writer of this true script ( wherein the story goes that this fictional modern script world who is also inside of this another historical script world ) that cute chubby girl script writer in the last ep of this ADWAD cdrama , who decided to write Nan Heng's character to finally figure out and be able of some sort to time travel between two fictional script worlds ( his and Song Yimeng the female leads fictional historical script world and Song Xiaoyu the actress fictional modern world ) ......you could say it is just like when Song Xiaoyu merged and took over and became this ridiculousy lovesick female lead Song Yimeng's character in this fictional historical script world the moment she time traveled in that world too....so when Nang Heng time traveled, he then too merged and took over and then became Nan Feng in that fictional modern script world of his beloved Song Xiaoyu.

@heyzon and @galactics ... .you two just hit the bulls eye.....couldn't agree more...loved and had fun with Prisoner of Beauty but surprisingly enough I preferred this one too....honestly even beating other ahem *cough cough * big budgeted and big artist historical chinese dramas that's out as of June 3 for now in this year 2025 only....for me anyway.....hope other upcoming historical dramas produce this kind of vibe and spicy * doki doki * romance that is very present in this gem Dominion and Devotion mini cdrama.

Ooh...nice....but I have a different take as you tho .... I am not shy to watch and can accept a very apt sad ending for a short or long drama so long as the SE given has no unforgivable plot holes in it and it’s not for a ridiculous reason on why it has to take that route in the end.... just like what this amazing mini drama did....but given too that the romance of the two leads had to have that undeniable, spicy and on the roof "hot as hell" chemistry , have actors that can really act, the amazing great plot and how they develop and geniusly unfolds and ties in before me is what will save me from accepting an SE too in a drama....well for me anyway...I'm afraid consuming too many sweets and candies will give me indigestion and will seem to taste bland after awhile if they are always being given and taken in the long run for me...so a dose of an apt SE in a drama is a welcome treat from time to time too. 🤗

Yes, it's an SE...but not for a ridiculous reason and the script going for the SE road I think is definitely very far from being dumb either..well for me anyway. ......Pei Shenzhi sacrificed his life for his beloved her Majesty yes, but for the overall good of his country too who has long been suffering in the power struggle and unending greed both of the nobles and the court high officials and is currently in turbulent and chaotic time under the reign of this newly built ill-begotten Dynasty of Ning. It's a "desperate times calls for a desperate measure" move for Pei Shenzi he realized that though he and her majesty both have the capacity to be great rulers but what his country really desperately needed in this crucial time is a benevolent and kind Emperor and her Majesty is all that and more who have a natural instinct of unconditional and unwavering compasssion and generosity towards anyone and sadly Pei Shenzi knows that deep in his heart that he lacks in this department, swift and just ruthlessness is already heavily ingrained to him since young, though through her Majesty's good grace, influence and guidance he is starting to learn now but " a leopard doesn't change it's spots" overnight that quickly and his country needs a solution now not months or a year or so from now.
And if her Majesty's true origin of birth and her gender is prematurely revealed the court officials and people will be divided once again and the country will be turbulent and chaotic more than ever before and worse she will lose her life. ML can't and doesn't have the heart to gamble his most beloved life on the line. For the greater good of his heart and his country and to lessen her Majesty's pain and future difficulties ( she only half cemented her great abilities and capabilities to her subjects, she needs to do some more as an Emperor first so when her real gender is finally revealed in the future her absolute power as Regnant Empress won't be dared to be questioned ) Pei needs to do this on his own and with efficiency putting his life on the line...the secret had to be postponed (her real gender)and hidden( her real birth of origin) so evil Chief Eunuch Zhuo who knows his beloved Empress of Xia gave birth to a girl ( sooner or later without the haze of Eunuch Zhuo's drunken in power and ace that he thought he still has over Pei glaze in his eyes he will put two and two together and know her Majesty is that baby) had to immediately die ( he deserved it really ) along with his hidden ace up his sleeve the former Empress of fallen Dynasty of Xia's imperial midwife ( in this Pei Shenzhi really had to sacrifice and sell his soul to the devil to kill an innocent woman, but I am dubious too about this midwife's character given that remember she said she knew a great sure way out of the palace ?..she could have saved the baby I bet you the former empress will have tried/begged her to.. me thinks, but no, she ( stated at courtt) just stood by and just watched as they were hunted and slaughtered and the baby almost died too , but her own survival instinct kicked in really hard so can't blame her really ).
Yes, Pei Shenzi could marry her and make her an Empress this saving her life for now but the divided faction inside his court and outside will still go on, and without the unity of his court ,turbulent chaos will keep on happening to his country, it will take him long months if not years to make his court in order and Pei Shenzi knows, remember before the kind and just young minister Hou died he stated that he hated Pei Shenzi to the core for what he thought Pei Shenzi did to his beloved master, he realized then ( Pei had an apt expression in this scene too) that if Huo hated him despite he only did all the past agressions for the good of his beloved country and that doing absolute and visible good deeds now doesn't mean hatred is magically erased, that there are others out there too same as Huo who still hated him with a passion and will do anything to hurt and take him down, that they will take any evil means of his Empress, her princess remnant of past fallen dynasty status and her gender deception of the court officials and whole country to their full advantage just to revenge on him where it hurts the most, his most beloved Empress immmediate and absolute death. Yes he has the genius capabilities to not let it happen but he really can't guarantee 100% this.
And if they fake his death this will come across as another ( traitorous and worthy of treason) big deception, a great distrust will form once again ( 'coz this move made it seem like there's one rule for you when it suits you and definitely one different rule made by you for the rest of us your subjects kind of thing which is not good at all ) and the court will never be the same again, country will still be in chaos for a time under both their reign and yes definitely someone's head needs to roll ...to at least sort of appease officials and can Pei and her majesty have the heart to blame an Innocent outsider to die in their stead though?.. I don't think so given that yes pei is ruthless but he is not afraid to take responsibility and be punished himself if need be..and the one thing you can't take away from him is he has a big heart and more so is her Majesty in that department. Unless they fake his death then wait for a very long time 10 years or so apart from each other with no communications so as not to shake her absolute Reign and avoid casting suspicion for awhile, with this plan take a gamble with both their lives on the line and only then after the kingdom has stabilized and remember the selfish lame ass cowardly 3rd prince elder brother? Yes him and we can only hope ( but I very highly doubt this too ) that miracles of miracles this asshat 3rd prince can produce and hope he will have a brave and kind offspring that can take on the throne and then only then reveal that Pei is alive , ride out the country's wrath, use both of their genius brains together to hatch a solid plan to escape the "death" punishment caused by this and abdicate , leave the throne without guilt now and live an ordinary happy couple lives.....hmmm.
So sad really Pei Shenzhi was at an insurmountable impasse ....fate, timing and opportunity did not give him mercy at all... so a heartbreaking decision had to be made ...and soon... so that his beloved ( her Majesty ) and his country both will live healthy and safe. Pei Shenzi asking her ( ep 24..no words needed, the scene right here and the deep meaning to their conversations here will do) to be safe and to move forward bravely without him and be alone from now on , to help the country prosper and be great again is just.. ╥﹏╥ ..and her Majesty's agonizingly heartbreaking reluctant acceptance of his choice , by ordering his death sentence ,was soo sad and so gut wrenching to watch....life really is just that...beautiful yet complicated .... And she did not disappoint his dreams and wishes, she did rallied on and made the country prosperous and great again without needing to conceal her real gender too.
I assure you though, that you will walk away heart wise not unscathed but satisfied and pleased that you persevered and watched this amazing mini drama for sure.
But then again the easter egg surprise overturned all of this sooo...happy ending I guess ( loved it and had fun with it ) ....hmm..but still prefer the message being imparted by the original ending tho despite the sadness of it ....
And this is why I think that Pei Shenzhi is one of the great and best rare swoon-worthy, lovable and one hell of a ML that lived in cdramaland periodt.
Small consolation ... though few years but athey had a very rare and meaningful good years with each other.....remember that bonsai tree that Pei Shenzhi carefully and painstakingly cared for...well my family tho not a professional , have made and grown a bonsai and dwarf tree too and for it to grow like that it takes years ,3 at most depends on the type of tree and how you tamed it and for it to bloom and bear fruit another 2 or 3...so 5 years total...it was so small a baby seedling tree when Pei Shenzi got it and it was that time too that he chose her Majesty as the next "puppet" Emperor and it grew and blossomed and bore fruit so you could say they've had 5-6 good albeit fraught and full of schemes and some very happy moments knowing each other and a very memorable and truer mutual loving years for each other for this two lovebirds. ..like what Pei Shenzhi said in one scene to her Majesty "what a great fortune and heavens blessing indeed, just by meeting and be allowed to love her and in return be mutually and greatly be loved by her too in this life" , so what more can one ask for?.... so trueee of a statement ╥﹏╥.....and sad to say this but definitely can't say the same and compare about the state of unhappy marriages and separations for a just for a selfish needs and reasons I always hear about everywhere today that's for sure....

She is baffled already she knows pei doesn't do something without greater purpose even before she gave the order to sentence pei with death...i have a feeling she will tho...one day in the future...coz she is very smart and she will put two and two together that they were switch....she will be too curious to know and she will want answers on why Pei Shenzhi acted out of character with her at the court that day it doesn't tie in based on what she truly know and see and feel about him deep in her heart, she knows they both are devoted to the country, what was the point of him seizing the throne at that time using that very ridiculous but "death seeking"plan of him when he had so many good chances in the past that he didn't took advantage of....why did he have the need to kill the former imperial midwife mid sentence of her saying something incriminating and the audacity to do it in front of the court officials and military too he invited death purposely...so what was this great purpose for?... he knew he was already in very hot waters at court so why would he have an inclination to seek death now of all times....coupled this with ( oh she will find that imperial doctor who Pei told to retire in the countryside, who assisted Pei Shenzhi's real mother in giving birth and she will know the truth in that birth register that the prince the concubine did give birth to is indeed a male and have a birthmark mole near the eyes (sounding more and more like Pei Shenzhi to me) plus the knowledge that only royals of blood and concubines of the emperor are allowed to give birth inside the palace no otsiders can easily get in, so who gave birth then inside the palace ? she will deduce that the former Empress of Xia and the current Dynasty of Ning's concubine are the only ones who gave birth so if Pei is the 5th prince , then she is the other child....this knowledge ties logically on the reason why the imperial midwife was cut mid sentence and that after her Majesty's beloved aunt/ maid palace who died after she forced her to seek a doctor so that she can be alone with Pei Shenzhi and why Pei Shenzhi acted very out of character very soon after that event too ties in that conclusion that they were switch....ooh she will know that's for sure but first she had a Country that is in dire need of help, that is in turmoil and is in chaos right now....Ooh yes she will know the whole full truth and she it will bleed her heart some more again ....for her Pei Shenzhi the great man who sacrificed a great deal for her and their country, the man that she loved with all of her entire being and who also loved her back as unconditionally and as equally with a passion too. ╥﹏╥

Yes, Pei Shenzi could marry her and make her an Empress this saving her life for now but the divided faction inside his court and outside will still go on, and without the unity of his court ,turbulent chaos will keep on happening to his country, it will take him long months if not years to make his court in order and Pei Shenzi knows, remember before the kind and just young minister Hou died he stated that he hated Pei Shenzi to the core for what he thought Pei Shenzi did to his beloved master, he realized then ( Pei had an apt expression in this scene too) that if Huo hated him despite he only did all the past agressions for the good of his beloved country and that doing absolute and visible good deeds now doesn't mean hatred is magically erased, that there are others out there too same as Huo who still hated him with a passion and will do anything to hurt and take him down, that they will take any evil means of his Empress, her princess remnant of past fallen dynasty status and her gender deception of the court officials and whole country to their full advantage just to revenge on him where it hurts the most, his most beloved Empress immmediate and absolute death. Yes he has the genius capabilities to not let it happen but he really can't guarantee 100% this.
And if they fake his death this will come across as another ( traitorous and worthy of treason) big deception, a great distrust will form once again ( 'coz this move made it seem like there's one rule for you when it suits you and definitely one different rule made by you for the rest of us your subjects kind of thing which is not good at all ) and the court will never be the same again, country will still be in chaos for a time under both their reign and yes definitely someone's head needs to roll ...to at least sort of appease officials and can Pei and her majesty have the heart to blame an Innocent outsider to die in their stead though?.. I don't think so given that yes pei is ruthless but he is not afraid to take responsibility and be punished himself if need be..and the one thing you can't take away from him is he has a big heart and more so is her Majesty in that department.
Unless they fake his death then wait for a very long time 10 years or so apart from each other with no communications so as not to shake her absolute Reign and avoid casting suspicion for awhile, with this plan take a gamble with both their lives on the line and only then after the kingdom has stabilized and remember the selfish lame ass cowardly 3rd prince elder brother? Yes him and we can only hope ( but I very highly doubt this too ) that miracles of miracles this asshat 3rd prince can produce and hope he will have a brave and kind offspring that can take on the throne and then only then reveal that Pei is alive , ride out the country's wrath, use both of their genius brains together to hatch a solid plan to escape the "death" punishment caused by this and abdicate , leave the throne without guilt now and live an ordinary happy couple lives.....hmmm.
So sad really Pei Shenzhi was at an insurmountable impasse ....fate, timing and opportunity did not give him mercy at all... so a heartbreaking decision had to be made ...and soon... so that his beloved ( her Majesty ) and his country both will live healthy and safe.
Pei Shenzi asking her ( ep 24..no words needed, the scene right here and the deep meaning to their conversations here will do) to be safe and to move forward bravely without him and be alone from now on , to help the country prosper and be great again is just.. ╥﹏╥ ..and her Majesty's agonizingly heartbreaking reluctant acceptance of his choice , by ordering his death sentence ,was soo sad and so gut wrenching to watch....life really is just that...beautiful yet complicated .... And she did not disappoint his dreams and wishes, she did rallied on and made the country prosperous and great again without needing to conceal her real gender too.
I assure you though, that you will walk away heart wise not unscathed but satisfied and pleased that you persevered and watched this amazing mini drama for sure.
But then again the easter egg surprise overturned all of this sooo...happy ending I guess ( loved it and had fun with it ) ....hmm..but still prefer the message being imparted by the original ending tho despite the sadness of it ....
