All I can say is that I decided to binge the novel and, if they include even half of the events that occurred, we are in for one hell of a ride. And a twist. I’m here for it! I can’t wait to see how it unfolds on screen.

May she take a final fall down a long flight of stairs… Soon. No sympathy for her. Ok, the psychologist in me has a smidgen of sympathy for her after hearing how she views herself and her relationship with her parents. She’s a broken person taking it out on someone she perceives as weaker than her. She went too far- this is undeniable, so my smidgen of sympathy can’t sway me to pity her enough to hope for a redemption arc. Those karmic stairs need to appear soon.

I think we need to keep in mind that this man has been largely ignored and treated as nothing since he was young. He’s been conditioned to think he’s only worth anything if he’s useful to others (his parents, older brother, younger sister…). He’s been told that he’s less than his brother. It’s a sick form of psychological and emotional abuse he’s suffered for YEARS by the people he trusts the most. This is why he keeps taking abuse after abuse as if it’s all he can hope to expect.

Lv Qing comes out of nowhere and treats him with kindness, small acts though they are, from the night of his marriage and the humiliation he experiences by both his new wife and his parents- who he just realizes sold him out for a brighter future for his siblings (can you imagine how you’d feel if you were him?)- and he can’t help but want to be useful to this one ray of light in his otherwise dark world. Imagine that and the conflicted emotions he must have felt after the event in Episode 3… Kind of like Stockholm syndrome without the kidnapping: He cries, is comforted by his “abuser” and continues to do whatever the “abuser” wants, continues to try to please his abuser, not because he’s a baby, but because he’s been groomed/conditioned (whether they both realize it or not) to that kind, warm hand and needs that small feeling of warmth, even if it comes at a cost of what little pride he may have- which is none.

And the way his friend downplayed such a significant event when he picked Xiao Fan up… Bro already thinks so little of himself- My heart hurt for him. He’s so downtrodden.

Our guy Lv Qing is down bad for Xiao Fan from early on. Meanwhile, our poor, innocent Xiao Fan is too innocent to realize everything he does seduces Lv Qing. The way Lv Qing looks at him… Like, he can’t take his eyes off him, would do anything Xiao asks…sometimes even before he actually asks. I know something major is going to case a misunderstanding that will put them where we see them in the opening to the first episode- tense and seemingly with some cruel currents (now I get the vibe that these cruel currents mask hurt from the past misunderstandings). I could be wrong, but why else would it be called “Bittersweet” Love if there is no bitter moments contrasting the sweet moments?

We’re in for a wild ride with this drama.

EDIT: So I read the novel (search on Wattpad under the name The Man Who Married Into a Wealthy Family) because I couldn’t wait. I won’t say where I’m right or wrong, but I WILL say that I’m really, really looking forward to what scenes they choose to keep and how this story will unfold. Sevetal WTF moments to come.

It’s definitely like HIStory: Make it Count, but all the episodes are like the traumatizing episode from MIC. I couldn’t help but watch even though you learn early on that JinGu will die- that there’s no hope for reconciliation and a happy ending, and that YuHo will spend the rest of his life with some form of regret for his decision to leave 2 years before. He regretted it after he left and never stopped. When YuHo saw the scars on JinGu’s wrist…Damn. He knew why they were there. He knew he was the reason for JinGu’s pain- and he could do nothing about it. Imagine living like a husk of a person for 2 years, filled with regret, then seeing him again and hoping for reconciliation and a fresh start when you finally realize the person is your soulmate, think you have a future, only to find out the person is dying and there’s nothing you can do- then the person dies in your arms minutes later, then you discover on top of all that that the person was indeed unhappy the entire time you were apart, suffering, harming themselves while sickness harmed them too. Yeah, I don’t know what my mental state would be like either.

Not sure, but the final scene/episode has to be farther into the future because he’d definitely need years of therapy to reach the point in 77- that or he offed himself in the end and finally is reunited with JinGu in the afterlife where they can finally be happy. Honestly? With how this series has gone, that’s the only ending that can make sense to me. Their Happily Ever After is in the After life. Maybe that’s why they names Season 2 “After”.

I will say the MLs did an amazing job portraying their characters. I was in my feels with them, both cursing YuHo’s decision and wishing a miracle would happen for JinGu so they could finally be happy together. Soulmates shouldn’t part early, right? Seems unfair.

Now I need to go watch a happy drama or 10 to get over this- just like I needed to with the first season.

I binged it. I can tell you that it’s not much different than the first season. You’ll need a box of tissues. and prepare for the cry headache afterwards. Seriously.

I feel the finale was a little underwhelming with too many flashbacks taking up time. I get what the director was trying to do, but it feels like there needs to be a special episode. I did enjoy it up to the neverending flashbacks and the final flashback scene. I’m sure we are supposed to believe a happy ending because they were reunited-ish before the credits roll. But still, it feels like a let-down for me. Just a little more of a nudge toward the expected end from the writer would be good. It’s the terminal illness I want more closure on, tbh. I’m sure they were rescued in time- the dad is supposed to be rich and influential, after all. I doubt he just dropped his kid off to die in a tsunami just for love. I’m sure he already sent the others off to safety before heading out in the van. So the only thing left is the gate of the town and the illness.

Because of this feeling of an unfinished story for the sake of time and maybe budget (dear BL directors everywhere: less flashbacks, more content), I’ll have to drop this from 9/10 to 8/10. It’s still good up to this point, so still worth the watch (definitely better than the ending for HIStory: Make it Count- unnecessary trauma in that drama), but the ending doesn’t sit well- like someone tore out the pages of the final chapters and burned them.

Yes, yes I am gonna enjoy the HELL outta this drama. Yup. (Subtitles aside). OMG the way he sniffed the cup in the car- bro was HOOKED! And I’m here for it. Yup.

I love this couple. They’re unhinged on screen 🤪🔥🥵in the best possible way, of course.

Real. Though I think it depends on the compilation of women. There have been female scriptwriters and/or directors who have written and directed well-done period dramas (How Dare You? comes to mind; The Prisoner of Beauty…), so perhaps it’s just this set that chose lazy writing over quality storytelling and editing.
