I wouldn't go that far and say they are the best parent material to be honest. Nan Lan is quite weak I think, and wants to be pampered. Tian Gui Nong just acts nice but is not really nice at all. That's my take though, and I have not read the novel so I can't really say what they used to be like :)

As long as you have some interest in it you won't regret at least trying a few episodes :)

As I commented to someone else, it depends on whether you can ignore the propaganda and appreciate things like acting, setting, other plot points etc. For me I am enjoying this, even though I don't believe in all the things that are said.

There are quite fierce fans everywhere :D I have not seen much from him before but I am really enjoying his character so I will check out more dramas from him for sure when this is done.

I am also enjoying this because it's like a history lesson covering a time I am about to study at my Uni :)

First episode was the most fun but from episode 4 things start to get intriguing :)

The thing is, as mango is the official distributor even if you go to an unofficial site, they don't sub themselves, they just take the subs from the official source. So since the original sub is not great, it's not going to be great in other places either.
This also happens when certain mango shows end up on wetv, wetv does not do their own subs and just use the ones that come with the show.
So if you are watching for the sake of an actor it's up to you if you find the setting, clothes, acting etc interesting enough to ignore the bad subtitles.
