It was definitely wwx returning to his old body. In the show it was explicitly mentioned that the "sacrificing curse" mxy had used allowed him to sacrifice his body in order to fully heal wwx's heavily injured body. Everybody also immediately recognised him as soon as wwx took off his mask and that would not have been possible had he returned in mxy's body. So yeah, I think wwx came back in his own body and they never actually mention whether he has regained his golden core or not. I am assuming, since wwx commented on his low spiritual energy, that he did get a bit of it back but it wasn't half as strong as his previous core. Like it's barely even there.
Even if he did not have a golden core, and feel free to correct me if I am wrong, lwj and wwx are perfect yin and yang so I think they can still engage in dual cultivation to make wwx a new core and then they can live happily together for 100s of years xD

I just think it's a logical thing to assume. For example, if a person close to me (as close as wwx was to lwj/jc/yanli) gets injured, I'd get a medical professional to atleast make sure everything is okay with the said person. But yeah it absolutely makes sense that they didnt bother bringing in a medic because they had lwj looking after wwx and everyone else taking care of him in their own way. thank you for such a detailed response. I agree lwj was the only one who questioned wwx and the only one who wondered if there was something more to the story. It becomes clearer post resurrection as lwj very clearly sees wwx throwing off handed comments about his spiritual powers and his reluctance in wielding suibian. I think my doubts have more or less been cleared now!

yeah I think the confusion could be attributed to translations as well. If we go by the idea that (in the drama) lwj could not detect wwx's core loss cause he was not a doctor, that makes sense and I am on board with that theory. I do find it hard to believe that no doctor checked up on him (the way wen qing did on JC) after he fainted during the Sunshot battle. It could be reasoned that JC was completely devoid of spiritual powers due to his core loss so it was pretty evident while wwx had developed a new method of cultivation which concealed his lack of spiritual powers? Does that make sense?

yeah, that clears it up. That someone with a medical background would need to check the patient to see the condition of their golden core so makes sense lwj might not have been able to detect it.

yeah, it makes sense that the possibility of wwx losing his golden core must not have crossed anyone's mind. The only instance where someone could have checked his pulse after the sunshot campaign when wwx was unconscious for too days. It isn't too far fetched to think that a doctor checked up on wwx when he was in that state and if a doctor can tell just by examining the pulse/wrist then why couldn't they infer about wwx's core loss? I am assuming it's standard procedure to check an injured person's pulse as that's the first thing wq did when jc was injured and that's how she found out about his core loss.
yep, in the novel it makes sense cause wwx was in mxy's body and mxy did have a golden core, albeit a weak one. But in the show, wwx comes back in his own body meaning he is still without a core.

Guys, I have a question that's been bugging me for a while. In the show wen qing could tell jc had no golden core by touching his wrist to check his pulse, i am assuming. Then why couldn't anyone tell wwx didn't have a golden core despite them checking his pulse/touching his wrist too. In the burial mounds scene in episode 44, after the other sects lose their spiritual power, the annoying sect leader yao asks a doctor to check his spiritual power and the doctor responds with "it's only temporary, your golden core is intact". There were so many opportunities when someone must have checked wwx's spiritual energy (when he faints after the sunshot campaign, when he gets stabbed by jin ling and lwj checks up on him), so why couldn't anyone figure out that he'd lost his golden core?

I came across this post recently and WOW, every day I find something new about the untamed that never fails to amaze me. The romance is just too well done!!!! I love how cql trusted its audience to pay attention to the details because boy oh boy, the subtext in this drama makes the literature-enthusiast in me go wild xP

as i said, i love all of the endings and i don't really see the OG ending as an open ending anyway but that's not the case for some so just to satiate their need, i recommended special edition/japanese edition. Rest is up to them!

yep, my favourite moments are arranged in the order they appeared in the drama xP
tbh everytime wwx and lwj were on the screen together, it became my favourite moment(except when wwx was pushing lwj away from him cause :( :@). The chemistry between xz and wyb is on a whole another level and i have seen so many dramas across so many mediums and no one has a more sizzling chemistry than wyb and xz as lwj and wwx.
The reuniting scene was what made me start being interested in the show and characters but when lwj smiled in episode 7, boy oh boy, at that moment, i knew i was a goner.

I have no idea why viewers are unsure about the ending. Even the clothes wwx wore in the last scene are different from the ones he was wearing when they parted to it's quite clear that some time had passed and wwx had come back to the cloud recesses to STAY this time. And it is 100% lwj calling out his name :D

i am a sucker for romance dramas and The Untamed, without a doubt, is the most romantic show i have ever seen in my life. Rest is up to you xP

well, if it's any consolation, the ending is rearranged in the special edition and to many fans that is the true ending. I love both of those endings! You can watch the last 5 minutes of the last episode of special edition to see what I am talking about. Or you can also watch the japanese version ending which is the least open-ended (although it's the same scenes, just rearranged)
