Yeah, I completely agree. I don't even "ship" songxiao lmao but I do appreciate the parallels between them and wangxian and how our wangxian managed to power through the adversities while songxiao succumbed to it. It's really nice to read someone highlighting the contrasts between the two so thank you for that.

when I say "narrative parallels", I do not mean that the two couples follow the same story or imitate each others' actions. It's just that lan wangji looked at songxiao the first time and thought "that is a life that I would want for myself and wei ying". Wei Wuxian looked at songxiao and said "lan zhan and I are partners/night hunt together, just like you two". Then there is the obvious thematic parallel of wangxian and songxiao wearing white and black. Wangxian saw songxiao and thought "that could be us".
But then, stuff happened, as you mentioned and wei wuxian was no longer with lan wangji and songxiao were separated as well. As you correctly pointed out, wangxian have a different dynamics than songxiao but they still remain the "what could have been" for each other.
At the end of the day, lan wangji had wei wuxian by his side and song lan did not have xxc by his side anymore. Therein lies the most glaring difference between the two couples.

yeah xxc spent a good number of years with xue yang and he was a naturally good-natured person so I cannot even begin to imagine the shock and pain that he must have experienced at that moment when everything was revealed to him. The utter betrayal and having been forced to kill his own soulmate at the behest of someone you trusted and adored...just tragic, really.

I don't know if you have noticed but XXC and Song Lan are presented as a sort of narrative parallels to our wangxian. They are the "what could have been..." for wwx and lwj. If you want, I can link you a beautiful meta that elaborated more on this but yeah in that moment, as you said, I can also say with 99.9% certainty that lwj was thinking "fortunately, you are here. fortunately, we are united." It saddens me to think that Lan Wangji was, in fact, like Song Lan for a whole 16 years. Roaming the world with only the memory of wei wuxian by his side :(

ugh bless you for that meta post cause as much as that scene hurt me in my first watch, it hurt even more after reading the post...truly one of the most heartbreaking wangxian moments. as for it being a way to show wangxian's progress, i feel like that's a pretty good theory!

funnily enough, just yesterday I came across a fanfic that explored this very plot point of a doctor discovering wwx had no golden core and telling it to lwj and lwj only. It was a fun read!

as for why no one checked the pulse hmm maybe they did check but didn't really understand what was going on with the core? or maybe cause everyone was scared of yllz and nobody really knew what was going on with him so they decided not to bring an outsider (a doc) into this and heal him their own way (lwj playing guqin)?
