They really wrote it bad... she wanted to help him. This was how she helped him in the novel too. (Though in the novel he was mostly out of the capital...)
But in the drama, it was brought to screen in a poor way, I believe. 😕
finished episode 21... so biggest problem is Tingyun burning those 4 confessions out of the blue like girl wtf…
Those weren't going to help her in anyway that's why YJX wrote one in the first place.
And I think in that scene, TY just wanted to prove a point to YJX. That this life of her with ZL is the one she will always choose.
But the writing seemed poor to me too.
If it feels dragging at E21, maybe the show is not for you. I was mostly interested about Zhao Ling's journey, whether in the novel or the drama. If you want more romantic scenes, then you’ll be a bit disappointed.

I was disappointed in the romance side of story. They could've done it better. I was happy with the first half. I was still kinda ok till ep 30... but then it went completely downhill and the chemistry went out of window. E34 tried to make up for it.... sigh... I just had to delete those previous eps in my mind to enjoy E34 moment....
In the novel, they had such tacit understanding and affection toward each other but in the drama they became out of character specially at ep 32... :|
Nonetheless I'm grateful I could see my favorite characters from the novel specially Zhao Ling, since he was mostly absent in the novel.
The ending went too easy on Ya Ke; it was meant to be a redemption, but the moment she abandons her son, there…
I think you're judging her by today's standards. We're making no excuses here. It's a fact that as a woman who has to only give birth and be a good wife in those days, she had no say in it unless her husband willingly give the child to her. It's sad that in some countries, it is still the same.... .

The drama wanted to show us his transformation from a once carefree man to a very cold and heartbroken man. They wanted to show how this path was torturing him. Then after finally beating their enemies, all those past events led him to just request to get away from the capital in order to be happy and carefree again.
That 5 year seperation with scenes of him fighting and getting wounded and the last event in E17, all made him the cold man they showed us in the capital.
Living in humiliation is a great suffering... Death would be too easy especially for YJX... he needed to live the worst... But Old Yu shouldn't have died that easily. I agree with that. :(
In my opinion, Madame Yu's and YJX's ending was fitting. Living the rest of their life with humiliation for those people is like suffering endlessly. Death would've been too good for them. You won't suffer in death. Also, the way YJX was even discarded by his own family... really... that was hell for him...
But Grand Security Yu's death was too abrupt. I wish he could've lived in humiliation too 🤣
I specially liked Zhao Ling and YJX's confrontation... I think ZL forgave him and with that forgiveness he set himself free of endless cycle of hatred.

It seems to me the drama was just not your cup of tea in the first place bc those characters you mentioned didn’t pop out out of nowhere and they were always there specially the monk and the guard named Qin... and other matters which the other commenters have fully explained!
