I am really annoyed by how little they care for keeping the secret, or run away. This show had a promising start but for me the second half is badly written.
I enjoyed this and hated it at the same time. They need to change the villains in these Korean palace dramas. The bad guy is always some old dude hungry for more powerš¤£
I agree in general, but you know what. I liked the thing. Had an overall nice time watching it. But the reason I'm writing this comment is that the name thing is explained quite adequately. The prince had the family name Lee and an one-letter given name, Sun. The pauper had no family name and a two letter given name (made by the main female lead) Lee-Sun. They might even be different letters that sound the same, but I'm not going back to check. And I think they established the reason why the substitude must have the same name kinda sorta acceptably well. Anyway.

That's quite a different mechanism, isn't it? Building immunity through small doses vs countering an already deadly…
Just a note on the poisons (I don't remember the poison being komodo dragon poison from viewing, and it's highly possible that something was mistranslated if something said something of that sort which I simply doubt happened)... it isn't JUST the poison they're taking antidotes for; this show involves opiates alongside the poison, and they're a "cause and cure" issue where dependence on them can actually kill people who stop taking them too rapidly. Our bodies don't process rapid change well whether that's from getting infections, from poison, from severe injury where the immune system can cause swelling bad enough to break the skin and bring systemic infections in (been there), or EVEN high doses of vitamin C supplements... which leech iron, a free radical, into the bloodstream and cause otherwise perfectly healthy people, even 20-somethings, to have heart attacks and indeed even die if not treated ASAP (C is fine from food, NOT from pills/powders/extracts/supplements even if they're partly food-all about the form and how it works in the body). You're hung up on the chemistry, but I know people who have died from WITHDRAWAL of both good and bad things alike. Your body-your heart and immune system in particular-can face AGONIZING pain if you suddenly change what its dealing with, and opiates have, especially in the more sludge-like forms from actual poppies, a lot of systems impacted; they slow your circulatory system and breathing, they make your nervous system response lower to painful stimuli, and they're absolutely addictive, physically and psychologically, and the biggest issue with people ON them for very real "a car smashed their body to pieces we're putting back together" cases where they're ABSOLUTELY needed is that REBOUND will occur after taking them either in high doses or over a long time, and pain from rebound is oftentimes described as having your body stabbed a hundred places then set on fire (some describe it as having an intense acid eat through them down to and through the bone). That rebound can cause, all on its own, system-wide failures, too. The body's just way more complex than anyone seems to want to give it credit for being. It adapts to an amazing variety of things-that-should-kill-it, and it likewise becomes dependent on things it absolutely should not. We're just lucky to live in a time when we can safely taper things off. Chemistry's a beautiful, brilliant field, but it goes way over the heads of even the best chemists, let alone regular people. Cardiac arrest is something I've seen enough FROM withdrawal (even of things that are terrible for the body) to have easily been able to apply that detail to this show, but that's just me coming from 25 years in medicine. Don't ignore the power of your brain-it can signal to the rest of your body urgencies that are completely unsound... otherwise it wouldn't be so dang hard for addicts to come clean (and we wouldn't see so many people on the verge of arrest when they DO try to stop taking pills or shooting up). Poison treating poison isn't anything new, though... an antidote made from the same plant or another plant that is also poisonous can be a cure or can slow things down (both existed then, but they were intentionally JUST keeping them alive/keeping it from causing probable cardiac arrest, the most normal shock reaction)...
I happened to love the political and social implications of so much of this-there is so much that could be fast forwarded into the current era that it was a sheer joy to let my brain reflect on them, the water supply THE most urgent then and now AND the most poignant.
Someone having the same name as the prince is rather important when they're using drugs on him that weaken his ability to lie. That seems like a strange hangup. If you want to really be hung up on it, you'll have to fight ALL Joseon era Yis/Lees since it was Ni (ė), not Lee/Yi (ģ“), til the 1930s. There were LOTS of "Lees" then... you're confusing CLAN for surname pronunciation here, it seems. I don't think they said that Kim Myung Soo's character was also from the Baekje/Jeonju Lee clan, only that he's from *A* Lee clan. They wouldn't be second only to Kims if only the royal family bore that last name-realistically very few descendants FROM the royal family's Lee clan actually still exist.
Strange that (unless "heavy" requires war or thriller material) you called this light... the social messages of it were pretty clear and not light material at all from my viewing years ago. That all said, though, we're obviously different people with different POVs and backgrounds and preferences. The only real thing that irks me is misunderstanding of information presented as absolute truth when... eh, truth is a really weird word to EVERRRR use since even that... is subjective. Facts? We have historical "as much as we know to be accurate" "facts" but what we call facts now (science constantly proving this) will be misunderstandings not long from now. All we can have is our single perspective and single human's worth of understanding. Presenting info as if it is infallible is a bit much. We know so very little of the world as it exists. To pretend otherwise is being rather arrogant, so I try rather hard to not give info I haven't learned in some depth beyond tidbit level (those tidbits often misinformed because early intel is always fraught with mistakes in delivering accurately).
I really liked it. Don't be discouraged by the reviews, try it and see if it's your taste or not. A bit repetitive, very naive and quite cheesy. And they certainly could have done WAY MORE! but a lot of nice action scenes, good sceneries, and the scenario is quite good actually. I mean, i binge-watched it in literally one day (I slept 4 hours, yay!) whole I've got exams, just because I couldn't stop. if you like romance and historic dramas, this is for you... but I like neither of these genre And still liked this drama, so, well.. just try it !
what's with all this hate !!!! I thoroughly enjoyed this drama 'cause of the AMAZING CHARACTER THAT IS THE 2nd LEAD !!!!!!!!! #TeamHwaGun
STORY: It was all so enjoyable, really. I didn't have much expectations at first. The first few episodes went by like a blur but when it go to around the 20th episode i was just there hypothesising on my own on how the real king would finish this long tale. Don't be discouraged by the other reviews. I spent a whole 2 days binge-watching this without hesitations.
CHARACTERS: Honestly, the female lead was useless as old milk. Really had high hopes for the second female lead AND SHE DID NOT DISAPPOINT !! She was just there emulating power i love her. Would love to see more of her acting. But also this twist in the plot with a powerful and not-evil second female lead is eating me i need more of this.
i bet y'all can't decide whether to watch this or not xD
for me, i have a love hate feelings for this drama, the beginning of this drama was really fun, but i stopped around ep 24 for 7 months, yes that long, lol tho i don't remember if i got bored or i just felt like i wanna watch a diff genre at that time. Until I decided to watch it again the other day tho i had to do a recap which took me more than 3 hours haha anyway after that i was already halfway through the drama and I was freaking pissed because of all that was happening, I was hating A LOT of character, i even freaking hated the leads, it was annoying but after a few more episodes it got more and more exciting esp the last few episodes. so despite those draggy moments in the middle i liked the beginning and ending so i was fine with it AND i think it is worth my time. :')
I wanna mention something but i think it'll be a spoiler so i'll just mention it in my next comment with a spoiler :'D my favorite characters in the drama *sniff* huhuhu
There were not many romantic scenes between the main couple, so maybe the romance of the two did not work and got a little vague. The story of this series focuses more on King Lee Sun's fight to help his people.
Hwa Gun was the key to the true king's progress in the drama. She did everything for him. Lee Ga-Eun was one of the motives of the true king, but by being surrounded by the influences and power of the court she became impotent and could not take a firm step forward. She could not stand upright or show the strength a main character needed to have.

Am I the only one who really liked this drama? all the dramas I liked in 2017 have negative reviews.
Absolutely not. Count me in! I also love watching this drama, not for the romance but for the political issues. I won't say it is free of plot holes and flaws. But it can leave me with expectations for the next episode. Overall, it is a good drama with the nice OST songs.
