Yeah, I saw in the synapsis that this show is based on a different novel. But reading the details made me blink twice. Stepbrothers, rivlary, parents dating...LOL. Details create a story, though, so this might be completely different despite sharing the setting or broad strokes of Addicted.

It probably didn't leave a lasting impression on her. She does remember him-recall that she greeted him and knew who he was when they met again in episode one. But it's been years since highschool. Those short interactions meant a lot to JYH bc he was going through a lot emotionally. As for TXN, she was just being nice to a classmate for a few minutes. Nothing earthshattering to her. So those memories faded with time.

Yes, he has motivation, but it's different than the novel. His altered backstory makes him a different person.
A good adaptation captures the spirit and feeling of the novel. Some changes are inevitable for the transfer of page to screen. But other changes are unnecessary. Those unnecessary changes are generally because the show creators want to make a name for themselves which distiguishes them from the novel's author, or the showrunners want to attract an audience which is different than the reader base so they change the show to suit that audience. IMO both reasons are horrible and highly disrespectful to the author and the readership.
In the novel, it was his loss of his father and care for his mother which made him cold and somewhat antisocial to others, and fed his ambition. It was also his humanity, his soft side.
He'd always liked the FL, but seeing her devotion to his mom after their marriage enhanced that a lot. (And yes, it annoys me that they're not married yet.) Also, the FL's care for her MIL brought much-needed balance and equality to their relationship--something sorely lacking in the show. He basically does everything for her, while she brings nothing of value to their relationship. He's immensely successful while she is floundering and failing.
I understand what you're saying about waiting for it to finish before complaining. But I can't help myself. Each episode diverges farther away from the novel rather than closing the gap. The latest episode where we see how well the FL's parents are taking care of the ML's mom, when it should have been the FL taking care of her MIL, really upset me. This is exacerbated by them changing it to the SFL discovering the issue with the FL's first account, rather than the ML. It's excruciating for her and feeding all her fears of inadequacy. The "competition" which the ML and FL decided on is just plain dumb and I can foresee it wrecking their relationship. All these changes are fundamental. Their entire relationship trajectory is ruined IMO. I am just beyond frustrated.
