He is doing great but I always feel the male lead role in c-dramas tends to be too righteous and typical. It doesn't leave room to shine. Whereas a somewhat dark and controversial character like the emperor is one that gives a lot of room for an actor to shine. And he is absolutely killing it

I try to ignore the spoilers about how the couples end up because I do think the dynamics between the emperor and Tilan are much more interesting than a cliche of him just falling for Haishi bc she is so interesting for daring to talk back to him. Frankly Tilan is pretty daring as well as far as the emperor is concerned.

I haven't read the book either but I have seen some spoilers from those who have that suggests Haishi ends up marrying the emperor. I don't think Tilan is that interested in the emperor, I think its so funny how she blatantly lies to him and he calls her out on it.

Lol Yang Mi's track record with her drama "shifu's" so far isn't good... is this timer different? I also wonder about the CP screens but from the way shifu behaved when she woke up after being poisoned I wonder whether she really tried to kiss him?

I didn't catch the timeline and precisely what happened and how the empress died is still to be revealed. Even if it was as long as 5 years ago the emperor is still mourning and is not ready to move on so from his perspective he is being coerced and he finds the fact that she looks like his dead empress very manipulative.

It is implied a few times that Haishi is very beautiful. And she is very spirited which is why her shifu noticed her to begin with. So the emperor finds her interesting? Plus YM is using a very girly voice for Haishi - idk if that is a misinterpretation since she is supposed to be disguised as a boy or its deliberate to signify that its quite obvious she is a woman.

All true but I think we should just ignore/block them and focus on the drama.

They are from a vassal clan that had a powerful marriage alliance with the emperor. They are keen to maintain the alliance and the emperor feels also to spy on him/his court. Maybe he even suspects them in Prince Yi's rebellion. Plus he is obviously still in mourning, has been neglecting his harem and probably does not wish to take new concubines so soon. So the timing is insensitive and coercive and then the final shocker is to pick someone that looks identical to his beloved empress looks like an obvious attempt to manipulate him. So I understand why he is enraged.

It is fair to say YM doesn't look 20 but she can easily pull off late 20s and this drama spans many years so in a couple of episodes AND for most of the drama she is going to look her drama age. Plus grandma is just plain mean.
