Well Daji was evil. This version humanizes her and explores why she became evil. She commits suicide and dies and is so ashamed she won't even accept her investiture as a god. She and Yan Jiang are reunited only as a memory. If you hate Daji then its not a sad ending she got what she deserves. If you emphatize with her then its sad because she dies in atonement.

Try Love of Thousand Years although I warn you the execution is much less good. You could also check out Eternal Love of Dreams/Pillow Book but I personally found that was not watchable and dropped it but many people who loved TMOPB loved it so you can consider.
