As far as I can tell the current emperor does not have kids yet. So Prince Li still occupies the Eastern Palace and is presumably still the next in line to the throne even though he is not named crown prince. After that would be Prince Ding if he weren’t crippled. Bc the emperor must be “perfect” and whole. That would put him in danger and cause the ED and her faction to watch him like hawks the way they have Prince Li all these years.

I think Ye Li is investigating bc she knows Prince Li is scheming - just as he was onto her plans, she knows him. And they have history she kind of still cares a little bit about him bc she knows he was also a victim even though he didn’t cover himself with glory. Finally and most of all she cares about her husband and she suspects some of the cases he is looking into are not striaghtforward and Prince Li could be implicated in them.
