Go is very ancient and classic there is a lot of strategy and art of war and life metaphors in the game. None of that was my forte in studying the classics or in learning the game strategies so I never advanced beyond knowing the basics. Jin Yong did actually describe it in a more accessible way than other Chinese writers.

We know someone who was once China’s female champion. She was super famous she even taught Jin Yong how to play they were good friends. She offered to teach us how to play properly once. Go was part of a classical Chinese education. So I would have failed school!😅😂 I do know how to use play both chess and Go but they both bore me silly I have no patience for either.

OMG I can't imagine anything closer to watching paint dry than attending a Go competition. I would never have survived ancient times. I would have died many times before I reached puberty.

An Xiuyi is very knowledgeable and commercial on trade matters and he is pretty quick and good at putting on a show at the negotiating table. His contribution is in different areas, they all will be a team that complements each other.

Their government bureaucracy is something like a Ministry of Foreign Affairs engaged in diplomacy. I think its quite normal for people to come and go in general because it deals with foreign visitors. Its not like they are part of the imperial palace they are just part of the administrative bureaucracies outside of its vicinity, high security clearance is not required.

The cast is overall good. This production has a lot of resources. iQiyi partnered with Wanda TV on this. They are one of the biggest film distribution groups in China. This is not a cheap production, it had a lot of access and it is shot movie style by a high quality production team.

I have had a love hate relationship with Western dramas as well! I still watch them but I much prefer c-dramas. I don't really watch other Asian dramas bc I read off a computer screen at work all day, I don't want to read subtitles in my spare time.

I think they went the bickering couple route precisely bc they thought it would have more audience appeal. As for angsty stuff in the mix, the moment screenwriters are given free rein to invent the characters as they like, all bets are off!
