Apparently the characterisations in the novel using Xuanzang as the protagonist are praised as clever in that it pays tribute to this magnificent historical figure but they are not deep. So its fine to change the characters bc its not a character story. It is supposed to be the plot that is ingenious and full of meaning in another way to interpret Journey to the West that looks into the evil in man's heart. I am looking forward to that unfolding but a bit frustrated its taking so long to move and I have a fear its being adapted to be more of a character story. My first impression is the scriptwriter is not good at writing characters so I hope they just stick to the plot and not digress too much into the characters.

Yeah the reveal took too long and it lost further momentum due to side couple sub-plots. I feel at this point the FL's anger should be more appropriately directed at Ziyu so I am baffled by her need to torture the ML. I hope she is just pushing him away to keep him safe although its kind of a stupid noble idiot trope.

I believe in the original novel, Yuan Mo is a monk Xuanzang and A Shu is a child he adopted. So she should be kind of naughty and thoughtless. Turning that into a kind of romantic relationship in the adaptation looks a bit awkward. But she is apparently a very important character. I gleaned this from skimming book reviews while trying to avoid spoilers so I don't have further details.

He has been continuously making fun of how her "Da Yong" accent is off to emphasize she is a foreigner. Probably in some parts she could be mispronouncing some words to make that point clear. Current historians have determined that the dialect spoken during Tang dynasty was most likely Southern dialects, closest to Fujianese or Cantonese. To the extent they are going for that, I haven't picked it up obviously yet. But considering Changan was a huge melting pot at the center of the Silk Road, it would be quite authentic to be loose with the dubbing and allow different dialects to creep in.

It is a highly praised novel but apparently the protagonist is Xuanzang or Master Monk who is also the protagonist in the classic fantasy novel Journey to the West. Apparently the writer wrote his own version of "Journey to the West" where instead of catching demons and evil spirits along the way, he solves a series of mysteries that tie into a bigger conspiracy. You can see why that would be highly problematic from an drama adaptation point of view. On the one hand, its like distorting a great Chinese classic novel which censors may not like. The novel mysteries involve real historical figures like Li Shimin which is always sensitive. And finally the adventures of a case solving Buddhist monk may not be that exciting to audiences. So I am guessing they changed all the characters but left the mystery plots intact. I don't know why they made it Go East instead of Go West though. That part sounds a bit silly to me but let's see where it goes.

I think the story should have ended when she left. To have her come back again unasked just doesn't do her character justice. Its kind of like after her brave speech, she decides its ok, she doesn't have to replace XRT in his heart. She is ok with some crumbs.🤦🏻‍♀️

Well all I can say is the characterisations are all falling apart in all directions.

But the drama turned this wonderful love story into this revenge story where the FL only cares about revenge while the ML is whipped.

I don't know the wonderful love story part but the vengeful FL whipped ML part is not working for me.

Why didn't this end at 33 or 34? I am really struggling to watch the final few episodes. Honestly I am mid 35 and this is painful and boring.

I didn't read the book but the stabbing for me was the point where a reasonably smart drama turned stupid. I don't expect her to be ecstatic she was played by the ML BUT he still saved her life, healed her and protected her. And he behaved like her worthy adversary Huaiyang wang would. I don't know what her problem is or why she needs to behave like a woman deeply wronged. Meanwhile her beloved Ziyu closed both eyes even knowing Yun'er cut her tendons and tried to murder her. Why doesn't she stab him a few times where it hurts instead???

He's a sociopath. The only love of his life is himself.
