BDJ and YDZ are parallel characters. Their fathers are both generals that helped the founding emperor come to power. Had YDZ’s family not fallen he would be just like BDJ, the spoiled but kind scion of a prominent family and he would have entered the academy, and married YWJ. The story illustrates how they remained friends but were doomed to go down opposite paths bc of what happened to them.
If the drama follows the book they are both fine. The book ends shortly after YDZ dies and both YY and LMS are alive. YY ‘s death is only told in flashback by BDJ in TBOY. Similarly it is told in flashback LMS and his wife die trying to save Langya wang 4 years before TBOY starts.

I was taken aback by this bc I think this was a change they made in the drama. In the book they accepted YDZ simply bc the enemy of my enemy is my friend. As you point out it makes no sense that General Ye would do this or that Beiili will give him control of such a powerful army if he were from Beique.
