This version rushes through the stories of Guo Jing, Yang Kang and Huang Rong to focus on the stories of the previous generation. So the first 3 episodes are already well past 10 episodes of the other versions. It’s bc it’s been remade so many times people already know those stories very well so they skipped a lot of stuff.
The two main characters of this story are Guo Jing/靖 and Yang Kang/康. They are named after the Jingkang/靖康 Incident, one of the most humiliating incidents in Chinese history, which took place during the Jingkang reign. The invading Jin/Jurchens kidnapped the imperial family and the citizens had to ransom them. This led to the fall of the Northern Song dynasty and pushed them to flee south to establish the Southern Song dynasty. Guo Jing and Yang Kang were given these names so they would avenge the shame of the Jingkang incident. Yeah but her acting is pretty good. The most disappointing for me so far is Yang Kang. No nuance and no charisma. Just plain evil in a sleazy way. But I kind of knew it I didn't like his acting in LYF either.
As usual Huang Rong is MIA. No spirit and not wicked enough. I think they skip around a lot, I wonder if it will be hard for people who don't know the story to follow.
