Those people often don't move on and will haunt the thread LONG after the drama is done airing. I find just blocking them a super effective way to tune out all the noise. I used to go back and unblock them after the drama is done but nowadays I can't be bothered.

They can be assigned to different bureaucracies or be given different official duties in the court depending on their qualifications etc. Its just that their court position is almost guaranteed by birthright and they get stipends from either the Treasury or a given fiefs that produce income. Whereas the non nobles like SYR have to earn their way in via imperial exams. The imperial exam system was adopted to reduce the power and influence of the aristocracy in the court. It is also a key theme in this drama. As we know SYR had to work his way up in the world, he has no aristocratic lineage. So he is fighting for an exam system that is fair where the aristocracy have less influence the outcome of the imperial exams. This was a key arc in JOL2 as well.

The 5 noble titles usually have some familial links to the ruling family going back to Zhou state long ago when the titles were established . After that high government officials can also be conferred noble titles as well but their loyalty is also usually secured via marriage to royal princesses. So they usually have some familial relationship with the royal family. Nirvana in Fire has many examples of how this worked to the extent that Lin Shu was the emperor’s nephew.

I think as far as this drama is concerned, the ship called realism sailed long ago. It is kind of strange to pick on the fan of all things other than for the sake of a laugh. When you have a princess that can have a man she is not married to openly in and out of the palace and students can wander unescorted around the palace and get up to all kinds of shenanigans.... In light of all that, suspending disbelief on the magic paper fan is not a big ask if you could go with everything else that went down so far.
