No bc a lot of the viewers are not paying and the ad market is in terrible shape. Youku has about 70mm paying subscribers its not enough. Tencent and iQiyi both have 110 - 120mm. So they have much bigger budget and they depend less on ads. I think the first FSMM will make money bc it was anticipated to be good so iQiyi gained ads and subscriptions. But bc it flopped they will struggle to get paid viewers and advertisers for the next 2. Tencent is making a total killing on JOL2 and they also made a ton on Blossoms Shanghai. Shen Li wasn't really their drama, they only invested a small amount in it and bought the airing license. I heard it didn't make much anyway so no loss.

Sadly itβs not. Youku printed a massive loss in Q1. Instead of making them money those dramas actually lost them a bunch. π€¦π»ββοΈ In sharp contrast iQiyi made more money in Q1 although I suspect the whole Fox Spirit series will bomb out and cost them big in Q2 and the rest of the year. Tencent is by far having the best drama year this year in terms of profits.

For future reference, when shows are available for non-subscribing members, the bottom row of the airing calendar will be labeled ιδΌε or Non-members. At the moment the Chinese ad market is very weak so it looks like Youku was not able to sell enough ad slots for this drama to make available a delayed free to view option for non-members. For this drama , the only viewing options are SVIP and δΌε/members (regular VIP). Both Tencent and iQiyi do the same thing.
