I think 8.0 is a good rating and I have rated tons of dramas I like 8.0. People are just far too generous with 9s and 10s.

Yeah bc academy/exam arc is totally over-used in c-drama. There is no fresh storyline or approach to it, it is always more of the same silly stuff. That said, JOL2 did the exam arc quite well.

Yups, its only rated 6.5 which is why I was a bit skeptical at first. I didn't read the novel reviews in detail bc I didn't want to be spoiled but words like illogical, doesn't make sense etc did catch my eye.

Yes it is probably modeled on Song dynasty, that is what the court gear kind of looks like too. But its quite a fictional dynasty bc Song dynasty was one of the most repressive dynasties for women.

If that is the case, it does not bode well for the emperor's judgement or his ability to stay on the throne.

I hope you are right but I don't watch trailers or read too much into them either. I just follow what I see on how the plot arcs are unfolding. A few new character intros makes me think maybe it is not going to be that quick. Bc exam reform is also going on in the court and it is a passion project of the princess. Idk why I thought this was 24 episodes but it is actually 40. It would make sense that this arc is a pretty meaningful one.

I am really not excited about this academy arc. This started out as a dark and dangerous adult revenge drama. And then now we are regressing to high school where we are going to do all the petty student rivalry and cliques kind of stuff? Don't tell me Duke Su is going to pop up as a teacher? OMG its like deja vu Kunning Palace.

I didn't read the book either but it seems like he was just a nobody scholar who clawed his way up through doing well in the imperial exams. Which is why he is advocating reforming the exam system to make it more difficult for noble students to collude with officials. I would guess his status was far below hers, which is why her father objected to their marriage. The Shen family just seems like determined social climbers. She was the most talented lady in the capital - quite a coup for a nobody scholar. But as he advanced it was probably not enough and he set his sights higher. Not to mention the princess is a bit of a man eater - she may have come on to him.

its quite a ridiculous assertion. Hostage princes and princesses are sent off to more powerful sates as a guarantee of good behavior. They rarely get to come back and most of the time, their own families don't give two hoots about them and do all kinds of things that can get them killed anyway. They are treated like prisoners of war by the neighboring kingdoms and don't return so arrogant and entitled. Its just a totally absurd kind of thing that only a writer that doesn't know history would write. If this follows the novel, no wonder the book was panned and scorned for making no sense on Douban.

That was a great scene as was his parting conversation /scene with Gege in I think 32. Amazing actor indeed!
