I just switched on subs @ Ep 1 at 3:55 on Tencent. It says March 26, 1911. It is impossible to be 1919. The Qing dynasty ended in Oct 1911 and everyone cut off their pigtails. By 1919, the men all wore their hair short.

This should be 1911 before WW1. The countdown they are talking about and the use of explosive materials are most likely for the 1911 rebellion that overthrew the Qing . That took place around October 1911 and that is probably where this drama ends. The Forbidden City was looted again after that so I am guessing the heroes were able to saved some of the national treasures.

Its an original script and I am only on ep 4 so I can't clearly see the plot yet. It may not have that much to do with the bigger political struggle bc that goes on until 1949 and this takes place in 1911. What I think it is about is protecting China's cultural relics and the looting of the Forbidden City many times by the Eight Nation Alliance many times even before the Qing dynasty fell. The Chinese have been very upset about this for many years and have been trying to recover their stolen treasures from the German, French, British, US, Japanese etc governments for decades. I suspect the cause that unites them in this fictional plot is they recover the treasure which the foreign powers never got their hands on bc they were hidden long before they occupied Beijing. They keep the evil warlords (ie maybe the Princess husband) from stealing that treasure and selling it to the foreign powers to finance their internal wars. But this is just my guess I don't really know yet.

MSD is not on either side yet. He is working for the monarchy that will soon collapse. ZBF is working for Prince Qi who I THINK is with Yuan Shikai who was not well regarded in history but he “wins” for awhile before he is forced to abdicate. Tongmenghui and Sun Wen should be the good guys but China goes into 4 decades of civil war before the CPC finally wins.

I believe his original birth name was Sun Wen. Sun Yat-sen was a name he adopted later on to reflect his political views. There are many different pinyin versions of his name bc of the many Chinese dialects and his far travels which included Japan and Southeast Asia. My grandfather was one of his followers he had a huge portrait of him in his hall. We called him Zhong -Shan I think Sun Yat-sen is more how he was known in the West. So the use of Sun Wen in the drama is more historically accurate.

The map was stolen by the palace maid, who passed it to the cook. Chen Wu smuggled it from the palace to a pawn shop in Tianjin. It was retrieved by a Lingxi woman (Zhuo Bufan's "shiniang"). That's how it ended up in Zhuo Bufan's hands.
Tan Xian (Tongmenghui) knows the secret of unlocking the map. He was on his way to meet his 9 Tongmenghui colleagues but they were murdered in Dagu by Zhuo Bufan's men. They tortured the 9 Tongmenghui members to find out the identity of Tan Xian and the meeting point (Shanghai) which is where everyone is headed. Zhuo Bufan and his sect are working for Prince Qi who is after the map for the treasure. I am guessing Prince Qi is part of Yuan Shikai's faction
Working against them is Tongmenghui or the Alliance. Led by Sun Yat-sen (also called Sun Wen), they are a secret society out to overthrow the Qing empire and restore power to the Han and establish China as a republic. I think the bald monk is also with Tongmenghui.

I am not a collector either I just go bc they are museum quality collections and once they get sold into private hands again they don't reappear for years. City governments allow them to show the collections at prime exhibition venues at nominal cost bc they make it open it to the general public. Yeah no rush on the book I can't read French anyway...
