But the key to where the story is going is at the beginning of ep 2 where Man San Dao is ranting about the 8 western imperial powers . If you know the history this is what led to the downfall of the Qing dynasty, which should play out in a few months drama time. This part got a lot of c-netizen cheering for the drama and ranting about 100 years of humiliation .So the cause that unifies the three unlikely protagonists is ridding their country of foreign powers and the traitor Yuan Shikai.

It’s gonna be a patriotic story about different factions uniting to boot the oppressive foreign powers out of China. Definitely not a wiuxia. Both platforms and Baidu and Douban have it down as fantasy adventure and romance. Wuxia is a very specific genre. Just having some martial arts and one fringe jianghu sect does not cut it. I also initially thought it would be a wuxia but after I read up on it I realized it’s not.
I am beginning to think that we should consider everyone present an unreliable narrator. All of their stories may have an element of truth only where they corroborate each other's stories. Also apparently this is based on a novel called something like Fei Ke's dinner party. But the adaptation pretty much changes the ending so we can assume the book spoilers are pretty much all wrong.
The cult massacre didn't bother me as much. I thought it was brilliantly shown how he was kind of triggered by the music that was so deceptively wholesome. He is someone who makes no bones about his evil nature. But the cult members were all complicit in murder and the target innocent and vulnerable people with duplicity. I think he gave them ample warning to escape while they could.
