CSF knows FK earlier than his daughter. He was the one planning for their wedding! The daughter has lover!
At first I was guessing she committed suicide bc she found out her dad murdered her boyfriend or something!

I actually used to own two real Qing imperial dragon robes. I collected them years ago when they didn't cost that much. I had them for a long time but after awhile it got too difficult to keep them well so I auctioned them off just before covid. I was quite sad to part with them. My living room never looked that fabulous again! Sotherby's and Christie's have many excellent Chinese imperial collections that go on traveling auction. You can sign up for their mailing list they go to all the major capitals in the world and it usually costs nothing/a nominal amount to view the collections up for auction.

That's super impressive. My knowledge is nowhere near as deep bc I only studied some Chinese history in high school. What I know is spotty based on what I read up on out of personal interest. I am more familiar with ancient Chinese history bc I find it far more interesting than contemporary Chinese history. I used to be involved with Asia Society and they frequently hold book events for Jung Chang so I have read most of her books. I did find Cixi an interesting historical figure so I did a fair bit of reading about her. I am not familiar with your French writer's version but I also read Sterling Seagrave's version and I actually prefer that to Jung Chang's. I think Jung Chang tried to white wash or defend her too much and it just didn't quite stack up with the facts of history.

According to a friend of mine, in the novel he is a bad guy. But the drama whitewashes him.

At ep 5, I was sympathetic with Xuanér but after ep 6, her multiple plastic surgeries bugged me. He already dumped her and she didn't exactly say he was making her do it. Her "excuse" for going under the knife again and again to win him back seems unbalanced and stalker-ish to me.

I don't think anyone else has the charisma to pull off this kind of role. I can't believe how everyone (myself included) is doing mental contortions trying to figure out how to defend or rationalize all the stuff he allegedly did.

I think the family should be remnants of the failed 100 Days Reform that fled to Japan. They had the map which…
The Guangxu reign was at the beginnings of half a century of modernization and change that swept through China. He was a young and idealistic emperor who wanted to implement the 100 days reform (Wuxu reform) to modernize China and change it to a constitutional monarchy. His aunt the powerful Dowager Empress Cixi claimed she was supportive but he was going too fast and many vested interests in the court were opposed. She put him under house arrest for many years and then finally poisoned him. He was a very sad emperor who meant well but underestimated his opposing forces. The opening scene and the actor who plays him bears a striking resemblance to Guangxu emperor and he did a fabulous job with the historical lines he quoted. It was highly praised by history buffs. He was the last real emperor of China. Pu Yi emperor who succeeded him was just a child puppet emperor and I think he was his nephew. I haven't figured out if Prince Qi is a real historical figure yet but yes he also wants to abolish the monarchy but does not believe in democracy.

Sorry, but who is Su Jin? was she in a villain in which drama, please?
There is this only one moment in c-drama I can remember where the ML actually stabs the crazy-ass love reject.

Probably in the later parts she is important bc she is educated overseas. I am guessing she will be the one that tells the foreigners on no uncertain terms they are to pull out from China after the boys beat the crap out of them.

I think the mastermind behind the theft of the map is Prince Qi and he has hired RongTian sect to obtain the treasure by offering them a share in it when it is recovered so they can establish their sect. But the specific details of how the map got to where to end up with Zhuo Bufan I am not clear on.

Would one of them be the controversial Jung Chang version? I read that one and attended one of her talks about it. I think Cixi should be dead at the time of this story.
