I think its mentioned in an earlier episode who ordered Di Lin to be a spy but I don't remember. I doubt it is ML's shifu bc he is not based in the capital he is the Yuanzhou commander.

No its not clear how the other chief died but he did have a conversation with his brother about Yang Minghua's ambitions and gave him a finger (which seems quite a useless thing to do). There may or may not have been foul play and either could have done it. But I think its clear Yang Minghua is very capable and he considers himself more fit than the dotty old man (who could just be play-acting). I think a lot of episodes were cut unfortunately bc the back story is not properly introduced and its hard to figure out what is going on. My guess is only the 3 bros know about Dilin but possibly the shifu knows too.

Yang Minghua is not loony, far from it - he is just playing Game of Thrones. He means to seize power and he and everyone around him knows it. All the trust conversations are just for show. He probably decided the moment Chief Yuanxing died he was going to take over and has been preparing for years. And in any case it is not clear he is the bad guy. The current Chief Canxing is quite dodgy and the princess Ning is not fit to be the next chief. Its a power struggle story, there is no real good or bad guy just who wins. The moment Yang Minghua ruined the North Clan negotiations he already for all intents and purposes rebelled. The Chief told him about the first spy to protect the other, more important spy (Dilin). It is the same strategy used in MJTY to infiltrate Gong family fortress.
Idk what they do with the drama version but my friend told me in the book he has another love interest.
So the books are 5 volumes and apparently the donghua adapted it in 2 parts. It could be the drama is following the donghua? I hear the footage was cut in half so yeah, maybe the other gal never shows up in this version. My friend only read the books some time ago, she never watched the donghua. She just remembers Ning didn't work out.... I guess we don't wonder why....

My thoughts exactly. I am sympathetic with Yang Minghua and have a sinking feeling the three bros are fighting for the wrong team!!! If its not bad enough to listen to her shrieking all day, her guqin playing is another level of torture altogether.
