Yeah this has to be one of the most misleading English titles out there... This is not even really supposed to be a romance focused story. Although I guess they could have changed that.

The first case is not one of the 3 original cases from the novel. It may have been written by Van Gulik or by screenwriter. It is not a bad case but the rhythm is interrupted too often by the two side kicks who are just not that interesting and should be seen and not heard in the beginning. Especially since they are also trying to set the stage for Di and other main character intros as well as setting the stage for the politics of the day.

Indeed. I fell in love with the JOL emperor at first sight bc he dressed down! If I were an emperor no way are you putting me in so many layers of starchy clothing! Not to mention that terrible hat with the hanging beads....shudders!.... I would totally go casual and only comb my hair if I want... bc guess what??? I am emperor, not someone's dress up puppet! I wear what I want!
