So which niece gets the award for that one? Hysterical. Yeah this thing is going down faster than the titanic.
The older one did this one. I think her sister is wining in views…

Not really. The only thing they have in common is solving different cases. But it's still a pleasant watch.
The Ancient Detective script was definitely a lot wittier and full of puns.

Am I the only person who suspected Guanshi in 3rd case from the beginning??
This is a big spoiler. Please cover it.

I rated it mostly on the mystery plot which is not that great but Douban viewers appreciate the Northeastern revival aspects of it and the good acting by veteran actors.

Thank you for reading and for your kind comments. I am not sure why there are so many 10 ratings out there either but there is definitely a very strong idol culture in c-dramas....😅

Surely not, please not MaRong love triangle, such an irritating character, she gives me a headache.
I don't remember the original Ma Rong I read it too long ago and in subsequent hit adaptations there were two male sidekicks. Lin Gengxin played one of them in the Mark Chao movies where he was an annoying, rather useless character that always got in trouble but he was so charming he totally eclipsed Mark Chao's Detective Dee. People familiar with those movies which were very popular are of course disappointed at the lack of chemistry and panache in terms of how the role is delivered here.

Well there are many "bought" roles in Chinese entertainment. There are many backers with lots of money behind the scenes help finance these shows in exchange for roles for their daughters/mistresses. It is well known that Zhao Lusi's extremely wealthy father helped her get many of her early lead roles. I have no idea whether Ma Rong's role in this was really "bought" but her portrayal has earned widespread criticism. And this criticism emerged long before the one sided love subplot came up. I am even not there on yet but am already cringing at the idea.

The screenwriter is Dutch? hm interesting
The writer Van Gulik was Dutch and he is long dead. He wouldn’t be the screenwriter.

I am still in the middle of the third case but I guessed the first two.
Yeah it’s a role many big name actors including Andy Lau and Mark Chao have played but I think Zhou Yiwei the right intensity and gravitas. I think in Mark Chao’s version his sidekick totally stole the show.

Well I read some of the Detective Dee novels a very long time ago and I have read and watched so many mysteries that I can guess more often than not. I think it is better not to guess - it just takes away the surprise factor so just enjoy it.

I didn’t know this was supposed to be a fantasy lol.
Detective Di stories always have a hint of the supernatural and the fantastical.

This was shot some time ago and it’s possible she improved but I know actors like Reyzha have won best supporting and she is nowhere near that caliber.

I don’t have a problem with annoying female characters or the writing. I can see what they are trying to do with the role but I don’t think this is coming off well. The only female characters stereotypes that i am super against are the noisy clingy love reject ones which this is not.

I remember my folks taking me to the theatre to watch this movie with all my relatives bc they all wanted to see what the Forbidden City looked like.
