Yups me too - I am here for a dark wuxia with a tad of romance and I am mildly irritated that its so much more than a tad while the plot is on hold. I think An Emperor is most likely the big villain. An state are colonists, like the big nasty British Empire they are colonizing independent states left and right. He swallowed Shaxi, Shadong and Shazhong, colonised them and married a noblewoman from each state. Wu state is his next target.
Empress Zhaojie was from Shadong and Noble Consort Chu is from Shaxi. I wouldn't be surprised if it is revealed Princess Qingming (Li Tongguang's mother) was from Shazhong. But nonetheless I am sure they are all discontent and trying to rebel. If Zhaojie is alive and is a hidden villain, she may be trying to elevate her son the second prince to crown prince.
Yeah unfortunately c-dramas still have a long way to go in terms of writing good FL roles. But even taking that…
