China is a country with 3000 years of bloody, difficult recorded history where peasants struggled through many droughts, famines and endless and bloody wars. They are naturally more pessimistic or realistic people. But I think its ok because life is about expectations vs reality. I dislike this increasing Western Disney HEA influence. It makes people even more depressed or discontented when they finally discover that HEA is not a foregone conclusion. As for me personally I don't want an eternal existence, I'd be bored silly. I'd rather be able to come back again and again or achieve eternal nothingness.

200 years earlier, Cao Cao the great 3 Kingdoms general wrote a poem with the same title which ends with a line that says only when you die you can forget your hometown. So I believe in the penultimate line in Shen Yue's poem with the same title, the 关山 he refers to is mostly homecoming or hometown. Cao Cao was also a great poet, admired and often quoted by Shen Yue. Lol - as usual the English title is a non sequitor.
The title 一念关山 is a line from an ancient poem 却东西门行/But the East West Gate written by Shen Yue during the Northern and Southern dynasties. It is a sad poem about life and passage of time and destiny. The line longing for guanshan 关山 implies reflections on the passage of time including past memories of life in the mountains and rivers, past events joyful and sorrowful or a longing for home. This is as relates to the personal/character aspects of the drama. In the context of the plot 关山 guanshan also implies the frontiers and mountains that outline the empire or 江山/jiangshan. Which of course refers to the political elements of the drama. This screenwriter is well versed in Chinese literature.
