Tushan Jing was the one who persuaded him to be bold. He can play it safe and keep the current status quo and nothing changes in terms of their standing. But if he supports Cang Xuan and Cang Xuan succeeds the Xiyan throne then he is propelled ahead of them all. Not to mention he covets Xiao Yao, who is the Haoling princess. He could elevate his family to end up being the most powerful and influential between the two kingdoms. After all Cang Xuan is hardly nobody - he is an unfavored, exiled prince no doubt but his sister is the Haoling princess and his master is the Haoling King. Beyond that, he is also genuinely impressed by Cang Xuan.

I know he is pretty useless - imagine the hero that chooses to die with you as opposed to the one that goes to the bottom of the ocean to save you!

I didn't read the original novel so idk about that. What I do know is it was a sad novel, I doubt there was much hijinks. They dumbed it down for the summer teen audience. It is very wrong of them to disrespect teens like that bc they are very smart and mature these days.

He is a tragic figure. He knows he has nothing to give her. He already pledged his life to a lost cause. It is like Cang Xuan said to him - it is only a matter of when not if, that Xiyan will wipe them out.

These love letters are really good at elaborating on the characters. Cang Xuan's is all about protecting her. Xiang Liu's are all about empowering her to protect herself. It breaks my heart bc it is as if Cang Xuan knows he will always be there to protect her while Xiang Liu knows he will not always be there.

Many Chinese title have a lots of homonyms and word puns that can't really be translated so making it Story of or Legend of is just easy peasy way lazy way to do it.
