Well it's all ultimately subjective and I eat up this kind of whodunits and I feel we don't get enough of these ancient ones. Even though I love his visuals, I almost always hate Zhang Yimou's storytelling. I guess this one is an exception.

Actually, I find it very fitting bc I don't consider any of them to be fantastic actresses. Idk Ren Min but I do think it is quite an achievement to be named for TWO, not one movie in one year - which is why that stuck with me tbh bc I've never watched her. Maybe she just had a bad year but... maybe, just maybe not everyone criticising her performance here is biased and is a troll. Just a thought. In any case, I may or may not watch this show but I think regardless of whether they are right or wrong this should be a safe place for people to express their opinions whether we agree with it or not.

😅 I've only watched 1 episode she has barely appeared and now I feel scared to continue. I don't know her work but she did win this year's Golden Broom Worst Actress Award for not one but two of her movies. If you don't know, the Golden Broom is like China version of Golden Raspberry.

I feel bad for her. The wig is an atrocity and too cheap for S+ drama. Bangs in general should be banned in c-drama. Idk why censors don't know how to focus on important things.

the rage he had on his face when he executed King Liang. I visualise from his face how angry he was at all the people that died because of his revolt (indirectly including his family and friends lost in the fall of Yangzhou) and the look on his face that said NFW are you going to do that to my new family and friends in Youzhou. King Liang's I am doomed look was also amazing. Such good acting all around!!!

Thanks this is super helpful. Clearly Fan Yu is just a disaster waiting to happen and the one I am disappointed in most is actually Fan Xuan for being so blind to and dismissive of his son's failings. Zhou Gaolang is a tough ass but at least all his sons are brought up right.

I am also curious, King Liang was introduced as a 异姓王 or a king with a different surname, which suggests he is a remnant of the previous dynasty's ruler. Is the Dowager Empress also related to him somehow?

Actually both actors have such similar facial bone structure and shape they could pass off as father and son for real. I actually understand Zhou Gaolang's POV and I am glad Zhou Ye also understood it. They had different priorities that ended up working out for them in the end.
